The questionable rename came at the conclusion of the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery and, according to WarnerDiscovery executives, was meant to signal to subscribers that the new Max has content for the whole family to enjoy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Immediately post-merger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/8\/3\/23818429\/warner-bros-discovery-subscriber-loss-hbo-max-rebrand-earnings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max lost 1.8 million subscribers<\/a> (that WarnerMedia attributes to simple attrition). But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/14\/22976876\/hbo-max-discovery-plus-merge-app-confirmed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the great mushing together of libraries<\/a> means that highly polished dramas like <em>The Sopranos<\/em> and <em>Oz<\/em> appear alongside the highly popular (what\u2019s a polite way to say \u2018schlock\u2019?) like <em>90 Day Fiance <\/em>and <em>Property Brothers <\/em>that, in the long run, will appeal to prestige TV snobs and families alike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Succession<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In the age of streaming, appointment television has largely gone away with more people watching shows at their own pace in their own time. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/3\/26\/23655517\/successio-season-4-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Succession<\/em><\/a> was a show that defied this convention. Social media has a tendency to make entertainment events seem bigger and more widespread than they are, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2023\/05\/succession-finale-twitter-reactions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Succession<\/em> took advantage of that<\/a>. Though it had a relatively small audience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/antoniopequenoiv\/2023\/05\/30\/succession-finale-hits-series-high-29-million-viewers-but-falls-far-behind-other-hbo-hits-and-broadcast-shows\/?sh=683b69f8a02b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peaking at 2.9 million viewers<\/a>, it became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/9\/23674872\/succession-season-four-logan-roy-connors-wedding-spoilers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the<\/em> Sunday night show<\/a> on Twitter. Its final season was no exception, managing to do what <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> could not with its own final season: finish in a strong, satisfying way. <em>Succession<\/em>\u2019s final season delivered as many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/4\/11\/23679320\/succession-connor-roy-alan-ruck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emotional<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/on-television\/review-succession-season-4-finale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discourse-inspiring moments<\/a> as its earlier seasons. Its final season premiered this year and was a spectacular send-off for a series that disarmed you with comedy so it could get in close enough to shatter your kneecaps with an aluminum bat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Barry\u2019s (Bill Hader) series-long obsession with being a good person has turned him into a paranoid and highly violent version of himself. His inability to accept any responsibility for his actions leads him on a path that ironically gives him exactly what he wants but with no way to enjoy it. And that inability to own mistakes infects others around him, making their lives just as miserable. <em>Barry<\/em> exposes the artificiality of Hollywood, both as its own entity and how that fakeness is internalized by the people who live there. The show\u2019s characters will ironically commit the most heinous crimes in order to avoid either looking or feeling bad about themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Barry<\/em>\u2019s ability to make you laugh while <em>terrifying<\/em> you with menacing performances from Bill Hader, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan,\u00a0and Henry Winkler made it TV that hurt to watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>BattleBots<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/entertainment\/2023\/05\/23\/hollywood-battlebots-championship-vii-streaming-discovery-its-robot-fighting-time.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>BattleBots<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>has become an institution in my house. My husband <em>loves<\/em> this show with a zeal he only has for Ohio State football, and his enthusiasm has infected me. The key to a good competition show is investing viewers in the competitors, and though in <em>BattleBots<\/em>\u2019 case the competitors are inanimate objects, the show has done a fantastic job building narratives for bots and their teams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It\u2019s fun seeing all the different kinds of bots, learning the mechanisms and strategy behind their weapons, and witnessing the lengths their teams go to make them stand out. There\u2019s a bot named <a href=\"https:\/\/battlebots.com\/robot\/ripperoni-wcvii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ripperoni<\/a> with a spinning disk weapon made to look like a pizza and a chassis that looks like a pizza box. As a part of the gimmick, Ripperoni\u2019s builders dress up as pizza chefs with fake mustaches to match. There\u2019s another bot that\u2019s essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/battlebots.com\/robot\/free-shipping-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a giant forklift named Free Shipping<\/a> and another team that dresses in LMFAO-inspired, <a href=\"https:\/\/battlebots.com\/robot\/hypershock-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eye-watering shades of neon<\/a>, while adopting a \u201cSorry For Party Rocking\u201d attitude to match.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And the matches themselves make for exciting entertainment. I have a hard time watching football because I can\u2019t watch humans take hits like that. But nobody\u2019s getting hurt when two bots crash into each other with bits of metal shearing off. If you\u2019ve ever wanted to watch professional wrestling but don\u2019t have a person in your life to explain the intricacies of wrestler rivalries, history, and behind-the-scenes drama, give <em>BattleBots<\/em> a shot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>The Last of Us<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23543145\/hbo-the-last-of-us-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Last of Us<\/em><\/a> inspired a deluge of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/tv\/2023\/8\/18\/23836566\/twisted-metal-peacock-series-video-game-adaptations-future-the-last-of-us-super-mario-bros-movie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video game adaptations are good now<\/a>\u201d hot-takes exacerbated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/1\/23695720\/nintendo-mario-movie-billion-box-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Super Mario. Bros<\/em> movie\u2019s billion-dollar box office<\/a>. Even though <em>Arcane<\/em>,<em> Castelvania<\/em>,<em> The Witche<\/em>r, two <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> movies, <em>Werewolves Within<\/em>, <em>Street Fighter<\/em>, and Angelina Jolie\u2019s two <em>Tomb Raider<\/em> movies all proved that quality video game adaptations were possible long before anno domini 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">When you take a game with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2013\/6\/5\/4396286\/the-last-of-us-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a familiar well-worn premise<\/a>, give it the budget <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/5\/21166469\/hbo-the-last-of-us-tv-series-hbo-naughty-dog-playstation-neil-druckmann-writer-chernobyl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and showrunners<\/a> of an HBO prestige drama, then cast it with an actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/11\/12\/20961052\/the-mandalorian-episode-1-review-star-wars-disney-plus-pedro-pascal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known for being a stoic father figure with a heart of gold<\/a> alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/2\/10\/22277372\/the-last-of-us-ellie-game-of-thrones-bella-ramsey-hbo-lyanna-mormont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an endearing fiery youth<\/a>, no matter what, you\u2019re gonna get entertaining television. Combine all that with a willingness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/30\/23577959\/the-last-of-us-hbo-episode-3-bill-frank-kathleen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to let the show do its own thing<\/a> and not hew too closely to the game\u2019s canon; now you\u2019re really cooking with gas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Despite my annoyance with the idea that game adaptations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-video-game-adaptation-curse-is-a-myth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only recently got good<\/a>, I can\u2019t fault using <em>The Last of Us<\/em> as the bellwether between the days of <em>BloodRayne<\/em> and today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">To be honest, the third season of <em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em> is nowhere near as strong as the first two. There was something incisive about the show\u2019s willingness to parody <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2019\/8\/16\/20807704\/the-righteous-gemstones-hbo-danny-mcbride-john-goodman-interview-review-comedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the uniquely American phenomenon of the charismatic, mega-rich, megachurch pastor<\/a>, and the level of cognitive dissonance required to run a church like a money-making enterprise. The third season, though, chose to give up that kind of invective to dig into the Gemstones\u2019 personal and familial drama to its detriment. It was interesting, though, to see the Gemstones take on a parody of another unique (and fighting) example of American spiritualism: the bible beating, gun-toting cult leader. It was like watching the two worst people you know get into a fight. No matter who wins, everybody loses anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Despite not being as fond of season 3, I can\u2019t stop watching <em>The Righteous Gemstones <\/em>mostly because the Gemstone family \u2014 Danny McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, and Adam DeVine \u2014 are hilarious and the show is personally cathartic. I briefly spent time in that kind of church and <em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em> gives me the opportunity to mock something deeply fucked up but also so normalized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Also it\u2019s really entertaining watching the horror unfold on people\u2019s (my husband\u2019s) faces when they assume something on the show is an exaggeration \u2014 like pastors descending to the stage via wires or being ferried through the aisles on horseback \u2014 are actually <em>real things that were normal occurrences at your own church.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Also! The third season of <em>The Righteous Gemstones<\/em> did give us <em>Baby Billy\u2019s Bible Bonkers <\/em>and for that alone, it gets added to the list.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>The Gilded Age<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">After being thoroughly entertained by the first season of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Gilded_Age_(TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Gilded Age<\/em><\/a>, I firmly resigned myself to the eventuality that the show would only get the one season. I never heard about it again, didn\u2019t hear news about it being renewed, and I just assumed it joined the pile of entertaining, well-done, but niche shows only meant for this world for a single season. Imagine my surprise when <em>The Gilded Age<\/em> season 2 practically stealth dropped earlier this year with absolutely no fanfare or advertising on Max.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>The Gilded Age<\/em> is an immaculately costumed historical drama examining the lives of the upper and middle class of New York City in the 1880s. It was created by Julian Fellowes of <em>Downton Abbey<\/em> fame, so if you\u2019re familiar with and entertained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/04\/entertainment\/gilded-age-campy-fan-favorite-hbo-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by such low-stakes drama<\/a> as ensuring your lavish dinner party has the appropriate number of footmen, then <em>The Gilded Age<\/em> won\u2019t disappoint. It stars Carrie Coon as the fantastic Mrs. Russell, who artfully and tastefully plots, schemes, and maneuvers to increase the prestige of her new money family in old money New York. I didn\u2019t grow up with cable and didn\u2019t pay for it as a young adult, so all the prestige dramas that made HBO \u2014 <em>The Sopranos<\/em>, <em>Oz<\/em>, <em>The Wire<\/em> \u2014 are things I missed out on. Now I can watch them at my leisure, occasionally getting my mind blown and spirit disturbed when I see beloved actors like J.K. This included a healthy dollop of Food Network shows affectionately known in my household as \u201cbullshit television.\u201d There is nothing better on Earth than turning on an episode of <em>Cutthroat Kitchen<\/em> or<em> Guy\u2019s Grocery Games<\/em> and zoning out.
