And thankfully that\u2019s exactly what the developers at Insomniac did for <em>Spider-Man 2<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23915605\/spider-man-2-review-ps5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The sequel has some new ideas<\/a> \u2014 including web wings that let you glide across New York City \u2014 but mostly it\u2019s just more of a good thing. More villains to fight, a much bigger city to explore, and \u2014 since you play as both Miles Morales and Peter Parker \u2014 more Spider-Men to control. It also cuts down on some of the open-world fluff of the original, letting you focus more on being the very best Spider-Man you can be. That means lots of exhilarating swinging through skyscrapers, and some very satisfying combat (where bad guys <em>definitely<\/em> don\u2019t die). Despite complaints <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/23573344\/forspoken-jrpg-writing-frey-cringe-dialogue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about \u201ccringe\u201d dialogue<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/operagxofficial\/status\/1735043000072372563?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">brand tweets made in poor taste<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23564532\/forspoken-review-ps5-square-enix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Forspoken<\/em> is still one of the best PS5 console exclusives<\/a> out this year. The parkour movement tech, magic system, graphics, and story make this game worth your time. It is still fun as hell hardcore parkouring across the landscape, and I adore the novelty of using different kinds of nail art to equip different abilities. C\u2019mon now, what other game gives you the power to blow shit up off the strength of your acrylics? None!\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Frey is also refreshing as a Black female protagonist. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/2\/23582914\/forspoken-dialogue-memes-ella-balinska-ps5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ella Balinska\u2019s performance<\/a> brings her to life with a flair that doesn\u2019t read as cringe but authentic. If I were isekai\u2019d into a world and blew up a dragon with my mind, you better friggin\u2019 believe I\u2019m gonna holler about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The game\u2019s not without its flaws. Beyond boss fights against the four Tantas, exploration in the open world is lacking. The dungeons are copy-pasted empty corridors and regular enemies don\u2019t have much variety to them. During The Game Awards, Sony Santa Monica surprised <em>God of War<\/em> fans with the news <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23992967\/god-of-war-ragnarok-free-dlc-the-game-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it would release free DLC for <em>God of War Ragnarok<\/em><\/a> in just a handful of days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Valhalla<\/em> takes the action of <em>God of War<\/em> and remixes it into a roguelite format. Kratos will have to rely on all his abilities and weapons as he journeys through combat arenas, facing enemies familiar and new. Every so often, he\u2019ll be offered a choice of perks and power ups with the goal of assembling the perfect array of skills to defeat all of <em>Valhalla<\/em>\u2019s challenges. It\u2019s a fun twist on <em>Ragnarok<\/em>\u2019s generally enjoyable combat, but that\u2019s not where <em>Valhalla<\/em>\u2019s true brilliance lies. As with all things regarding this new era of <em>God of War<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23437043\/god-of-war-ragnarok-review-sony-ps5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s the story that\u2019s the most compelling part of the game<\/a>. In <em>Valhalla<\/em>, Kratos is once again forced to reckon with his past, but this time, it\u2019s not being used as a bludgeon but as a vehicle for healing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The most honest impression of <em>Valhalla<\/em>\u2019s story is \u201cThe One Where Kratos Goes To Therapy\u2026Literally.\u201d Kratos is so fearful that he will repeat his mistakes that it prevents him from embracing a better future. And so much of <em>Valhalla<\/em>\u2019s dialogue and interactions are wrapped up in examining some of those mistakes (remember when he ripped off Helios\u2019 head and plunged Greece into a sunless darkness?) and recontextualizing them in a way that Kratos can accept them for what they are and move on. The DLC is a 10-hour (or less depending on how good you are) therapy session that can feel a little preachy at times but considering <em>God of War<\/em>\u2019s target audience, that might not be such a bad thing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Yes, I know <em>BG3<\/em> already showed up on the PC list, but this is my list and I can do what I want \u2014 and I wanna talk about the console version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23818692\/baldurs-gate-3-starting-guide-tips-how-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my game of the year<\/a>, so you will deal with it. I was thrilled to death that <em>BG3<\/em> was coming to console, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23861883\/baldurs-gate-3-ps5-technical-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the initial reality left me a bit cold<\/a>. <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> on the PS5 was clunky and buggy with a massive learning curve to surmount before I was having fun again. I\u2019m happy to say that Larian Studios\u2019 commitment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/27\/23892316\/the-latest-hotfix-for-baldurs-gate-3-resolves-some-game-crashing-bugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to post-launch patches<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/11\/30\/23982661\/baldurs-gate-3-patch-5-details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and updates<\/a> have improved the game\u2019s performance such that the experience on PC and PS5 feels seamless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> is one of those once in a decade, epoch-shifting games for its level of depth, detail, and sheer size. I\u2019ve spent 300+ hours in the game and missed whole swathes of content. I don\u2019t mean minor side quests here and there but entire areas completely untouched. If <em>Dungeons and Dragons<\/em> combat isn\u2019t your thing, then <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate<\/em> may try your patience, but what the game offers in terms of storytelling and <em>characters<\/em> makes all frustrations with combat worth it. These are some of the best performances and writing in a game since ever. It eclipses all its inspirations and forebears. From now on, all extensively narrative RPGs will be compared to <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate<\/em>; it is the platinum standard. And there\u2019s hot elves! And hot tieflings! Everybody\u2019s hot! I still <em>viscerally<\/em> remember my experience \u201caccepting the truth.\u201d The fight with Bahamut is embedded into my brain, etched upon my very heart as the pinnacle of video game combat. Fighting in <em>Final Fantasy XVI<\/em> felt so friggin\u2019 <em>goodt<\/em> that I can excuse the game\u2019s weaker story moments because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23767669\/final-fantasy-xvi-review-ps5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it took the worst lessons from \u201cgritty\u201d prestige shows like <em>Game of Thrones<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Enhanced by a soundtrack from Masayoshi Soken that feels like injecting <em>pure<\/em> <em>gas<\/em> into your veins and voice performances by Ben Starr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23780159\/ralph-ineson-final-fantasy-xvi-diablo-iv-voice-actor-cid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and Ralph Ineson<\/a>, <em>Final Fantasy XVI<\/em> makes you feel like you could punch God in the face\u2026 then lets you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-heading mb-20 mt-40 font-polysans text-26 font-medium leading-110 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple md:text-30 [&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;&gt;a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin [&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;&gt;a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Diablo IV<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I discovered for the first time why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23747068\/diablo-iv-review-blizzard-class-customization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <em>Diablo<\/em> format clicks for people<\/a>. Sometimes the grind is good. <em>Diablo IV<\/em> makes the grind feel good with all the different and highly detailed ways you can build a character designed to do one thing only: wreck shit. Numbers go up should not be, but often is, the core conceit of a game, and yet Blizzard has found a way to make that fun as \u2026well \u2026hell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I\u2019m not even concerned about building the most efficient sorcerer by taking the \u201cright\u201d skills and abilities, I\u2019ve correctly tuned into wanting to build powerful characters around an ability that I find enjoyable. <em>Diablo IV<\/em> works because every facet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23697922\/diablo-iv-class-customization-character-creator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that kind of customization is rewarding to the player<\/a>.
