The Slade frontman, 77, was given six months to live when he was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer five years ago but says he\u2019s now on an \u201ceven keel\u201d after undergoing gruelling experimental medicine treatment. <\/p>\n
He told BBC Radio 2: \u201cIt was touch and go. I lost all my hair. My weight was down to about eight stone \u2013 so every cloud. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve just had a scan last week and everything\u2019s on an even keel at the moment, so I hope it carries on that way. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m fit, fit, fit\u2026 but I\u2019m fit for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe \u2018Merry Xmas Everybody\u2019 rocker and wife Suzan kept his cancer fight secret for five years, but Noddy spoke out this year about his diagnosis to highlight the work of the Christie group in Manchester. <\/p>\n
\nHe added to Radio 2\u2019s Johnnie Walker: \u201cI was more worried for Suzan and the kids and the grandkids than I was for myself, really, because I knew it\u2019d be much more of a trauma or certainly an equal trauma for them as it was for me. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cFive years later, I\u2019m still standing, in the words of Elton (John.)\u201d <\/p>\n
\nNoddy had previously vowed to belt out his famous \u201cIt\u2019s Christmaaaaaas\u201d lyric live after returning to stage following his cancer battle. <\/p>\n
\nHe said earlier this year when asked if he intends to get back to singing \u2018Merry Xmas Everybody\u2019 at gigs: \u201cOh yes. I don\u2019t really know why my voice wasn\u2019t affected, because my breathing was. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI don\u2019t quite breathe in the same way I used to, but somehow I\u2019ve adapted the singing around it.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nSlade, formed in Wolverhampton in 1966, went on to become one of the most influential glam rock bands of the 1970s, scoring six No1s, including festive favourite \u2018Merry Xmas Everybody\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
