British actor Harris Dickinson<\/strong> stars alongside long-time heartthrobs Zac Efron<\/strong><\/a> and Jeremy Allen White<\/strong><\/a> in The Iron Claw<\/em>, out in theaters on Friday, December 22, and audiences will want to know more about this rising star.<\/p>\n

The film follows the real-life story of the Von Erich brothers, who were thrown into the wrestling ring to follow in their father\u2019s footsteps. The professional wrestlers had huge success in the 1980s, but many terrible family tragedies plagued the Von Erichs, leading to fans describing what happened to the family as the \u201cVon Erich curse.\u201d The film has incredible performances from Efron and Allen White, but Dickinson, 27, playing David Von Erich, with his gentle nature, is the beating heart of the wrestling film.<\/p>\n

The Iron Claw<\/em><\/a> isn\u2019t the only 2023 role that Dickinson has shined in. He started the year off with the film Scrapper<\/em>, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where he got positive reviews for his portrayal of a young father who is trying to reconnect with his 12-year-old daughter. Dickinson also played Bill in FX\u2019s A Murder at the End of the World<\/em>, which premiered in November, alongside The Crown<\/em> alum Emma Corrin<\/strong><\/a> where they played amateur detectives who have been invited to solve a murder at a retreat.<\/p>\n

Dickinson has been acting for years with his most notable roles in 2022\u2019s Triangle of Sadness<\/em> and playing Prince Philip in 2019\u2019s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil<\/em>. He\u2019s also been in films like Where the Crawdads Sing<\/em> and The King\u2019s Man<\/em> as well as the television show Trust<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1. He Almost Enlisted in the Royal Marines<\/h3>\n

Dickinson was in the cadets and planned on joining the Royal Marines when he turned 17 but instead decided to professionally pursue acting even though he didn\u2019t go to drama school. During this period of time, Dickinson folded clothes at Hollister and other various odd jobs in between auditions. \u201cI remember, I\u2019d be in the basement folding clothes and I\u2019d get a call from an unknown number,\u201d he told The Guardian<\/em><\/a> in 2022. \u201cAnd an unknown number always meant it was my agent. So every time, I thought: \u2018This is it! I\u2019m out of here!\u2019 And I\u2019d rush upstairs and listen to the voicemail and they\u2019d be like: \u2018Yeah, you didn\u2019t get it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

2. His Longtime Girlfriend is Musician Rose Gray<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dickinson has been in a long term relationship with Rose Gray<\/strong>, a musician. The pair, who frequently attend events together, haven\u2019t chatted about when they started dating, but a Hunger<\/em> interview<\/a> with both Dickinson and Gray reported that they\u2019ve been dating since they were teenagers. In 2022, Dickinson mentioned living with Gray and their cat, a British shorthair named Misty Blue.<\/p>\n

Recently, Dickinson directed a video for Gray\u2019s single \u201cAfraid of Nothing,\u201d which isn\u2019t their first collaboration. He also directed a video for her song, \u201cBlue.\u201d Dickinson said that their close relationship helps them creatively. \u201cIt\u2019s also testing for a relationship because you\u2019ve got to open yourself up to a different kind of dynamic. But it definitely helps with the closeness because you can get to things quicker without that sense of carefulness and trepidation around being offensive,\u201d he told Hunger<\/em>. \u201cWe\u2019re so close that we can just be very direct. 3. Zac Efron Was an Acting Inspiration for Him<\/h3>\n

Dickinson shared how his onscreen brother inspired his pursuit of acting and not pursuing a career in the marines. Efron\u2019s famous role as Troy Bolton in High School Musical<\/em> was a big part of that. \u201cI was battling between understanding my interest in theater and being in the Marines \u2014 there was this machismo,\u201d Dickinson told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAnd I remember seeing High School Musical<\/em> \u2014 and this is incredibly cheesy and vulnerable \u2014 but I remember thinking, \u2018Oh, if Troy Bolton can do it \u2026\u2019 The films he\u2019d done, they were cultural phenomena.\u201d<\/p>\n

High School Musical<\/em> clearly left its mark on Dickinson. In a 2023 BuzzFeed<\/em> interview<\/a>, he sang a few bars of \u201cBreaking Free\u201d \u2014 and he wasn\u2019t too bad!<\/p>\n

4. He Felt Silly Wrestling in \u2018Iron Claw\u2019<\/h3>\n

Even though he had support from his Iron Claw<\/em> costars, Dickinson initially felt silly when hitting the ring and training for the film, especially when hitting pillows for practice at home.<\/p>\n
