Starlink\u2019s testing a new satellite internet service it says will let you \u201cconnect from almost anywhere on land in the world,\u201d according to a message some Starlink users have received<\/a>. The SpaceX-owned company calls it \u201cGlobal Roaming Service\u201d and says it\u2019ll cost $200 per month in addition to the base $599 Starlink Kit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The service, which uses \u201cStarlink\u2019s inter-satellite links (aka space lasers) to provide connectivity around the globe,\u201d comes with a pretty big caveat. In its message to users, Starlink notes that you should expect \u201cStarlink\u2019s typical high speed, low-latency service intermixed with brief periods of poor connectivity, or none at all\u201d but that this will \u201cimprove dramatically over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n It\u2019s also not immediately clear how Starlink will follow through on its promise to provide internet from nearly anywhere. Starlink is still waiting on regulatory approval in various countries, including India, Pakistan, and Cambodia, and is completely unavailable in others. Despite this, PCMag<\/em> reports<\/a> that Starlink is offering the Global Roaming service to some users outside the company\u2019s coverage areas<\/a>, such as Greenland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n While Starlink already lets users travel with their dishes (nicknamed \u201cDishy\u201d), the Global Roaming service sounds like it might come with fewer limitations. The existing $135 per month Starlink RV plan<\/a>, for instance, lets users equip their RVs with Starlink\u2019s hardware for internet access while traveling, and comes with the option of an even pricier dish for internet access on the go<\/a>. But it\u2019s only available in certain parts of the globe<\/a>, and internet access isn\u2019t prioritized like it is for residential customers, resulting in slower speeds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
