Bachelor Nation\u2019s Ellen Goltzer<\/strong><\/a> almost never made it on the Golden Bachelor<\/em><\/a> \u2014 but her late friend Roberta offered up some major motivation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never told anybody this. \u2026 I developed an abscess on my cheek, and it was three weeks before I was supposed to go,\u201d Ellen, 71, revealed during the Friday, December 22, episode of \u201cThe Ben & Ashley I Almost Famous<\/a>\u201d podcast, noting that she couldn\u2019t go on television with something on her face. \u201cIt was really like a golf ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellen traveled from Florida to her doctor in New York, who was determined to get the \u201creally scary\u201d situation figured out before the Golden Bachelor<\/em> started filming.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoberta kept saying to me the whole time \u2014 that\u2019s where I get this from \u2014 never say never,\u201d Ellen recalled, sharing that her face \u201ccleared up enough to cover it with makeup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Golden Bachelor<\/em> viewers heard about Ellen\u2019s late friend Roberta during the show\u2019s premiere. The best friends had watched The Bachelor<\/em><\/a> franchise for 20 years before Roberta pushed Ellen to apply for The Golden Bachelor<\/em>. At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Roberta had died of cancer before the show aired.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I wasn\u2019t going to go. That\u2019s how bad it was,\u201d Ellen said on Friday\u2019s podcast about her face. \u201cBut she kept motivating me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, Ellen filmed the Golden Bachelor<\/em> and felt Roberta\u2019s \u201cpresence\u201d with her the whole time. \u201cWhen I got home and I couldn\u2019t communicate with her because she was in a semi-coma state, it was really difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the Women Tell All<\/em><\/a> special last month, Ellen shared a very special tribute<\/a> to her late friend. Roberta\u2019s daughter, Courtney<\/strong>, even surprised Ellen in the crowd. On Friday\u2019s podcast, Ellen said Courtney is \u201clike a daughter to her\u201d and they still spend time together at Roberta\u2019s home \u2014 where Ellen is staying.<\/p>\n
