Anyone But You earns 2.5 stars (out of 4) from Us Weekly movie critic Mara Reinstein.<\/em><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t make romantic comedies anymore \u2014 well, they don\u2019t make \u2018em like they used to anymore. What\u2019s the last great one you loved in the theater? How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days<\/em>? Love, Actually<\/em>? Yeah, both are 20 years old.<\/p>\n

No wonder before the December 11 world premiere of Anyone But You<\/em><\/a>, director and co-screenwriter Will Gluck<\/strong><\/a> (Easy A<\/em>) half-joked to the audience, \u201cWelcome to the last rom-com in the history of cinema!\u201d<\/p>\n

It would be an honor to report that Anyone But You<\/em>, starring Sydney Sweeney<\/strong><\/a> and Glen Powell<\/strong><\/a>, is a witty gem that harkens back to rom-com favorites from the past and will swiftly usher in a round of sunny delights in the future. Nope. There\u2019s too little credible rom or laugh-out-loud com. There\u2019s even less originality in this loose adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s Much Ado About Nothing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSydney Sweeney and Glen Powell may hate each other in their forthcoming romantic comedy Anyone But You, but the actors are close friends in real life. The duo were first announced as the film\u2019s stars in January 2023. By April of that year, Sweeney and Powell had jetted to Australia in order to film the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And though it is sunny, that\u2019s because most of the story unfolds in exotic Australia. So if you think of the pic merely as a wish-you-were-here postcard of beautiful people with beautiful bodies frolicking in a beautiful place, you\u2019ll make out just fine. That is, as you watch the beautiful people make out.<\/p>\n

Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) lock eyes in a crowded Boston coffee shop. (The feisty old man in The Holiday<\/em> would likely cringe at the Meet Cute.) They go back to Ben\u2019s place, banter it up and fall asleep in each other\u2019s arms. It\u2019s the idyllic first date \u2014 but due to a two-way misunderstanding, the romance is over before it starts.<\/p>\n

The pair could have cleared things up in a few texts, but then there would be no movie. Instead, six months later, they\u2019re forced to reconnect because, as pure coincidence, her sister (Hadley Robinson<\/strong>) becomes engaged to the sister (Alexandra Shipp<\/strong>) of his roommate (GaTa<\/strong>). Adding to the awkwardness, the families soon throw them a destination wedding in Sydney. Frequent flier miles galore for everyone!<\/p>\n

An unhappy Bea and Ben let the tart insults fly. She calls him \u201ca f\u2013k boy\u201d twice. He mocks her about her recent broken engagement. Obviously, all the teasing is code for \u201cI really like you, and this is my pathetic attempt at flirting!\u201d George Clooney<\/strong> and Julia Roberts<\/strong> are such pros at this flavor of repartee, they even wrung laughs out of their uninspired lines in last year\u2019s Ticket to Paradise<\/em>. Powell and Sweeney, though appealing, aren\u2019t there yet. Their exchanges fall flat.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAll the world\u2019s a stage \u2014 and the perfect inspiration for a romantic comedy plot line! Many beloved romance-focused movies have taken inspiration from the Bard himself: William Shakespeare. 10 Things I Hate About You, the 1999 cult classic that starred the likes of Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, was initially inspired by Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0The Taming [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a contrived only-in-the-movies twist, Bea\u2019s pushy parents (Dermot Mulroney<\/strong> and Rachel Griffiths<\/strong>) invite her ex-fianc\u00e9 (Darren Barnet<\/strong> in a thankless role) Down Under in the hopes of a reconciliation. During the same weekend of their other daughter\u2019s wedding?! Sure.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ben is dismayed that his former Aussie girlfriend (Charlee Fraser<\/strong>) is also on-hand for the festivities. Solution: Bea and Ben decide to fake a romance to get her parents off her back and make his sexy ex jealous. The conceit is ridiculous. It does, however, enable Sweeney and Powell the chance to put their hands down each other\u2019s bare backsides for laughs and for Powell to frantically strip nude in front of his loved ones.<\/p>\n

Anyone But You<\/em> relies on that brand of joke. There\u2019s zero percent chance these two don\u2019t end up together, so it\u2019s only a matter of how many predictable second-rate hijinks we must endure before Ben chases after Bea and finally declares his true feelings by listing all the things he loves about her. This is not a spoiler; it\u2019s rom-com 101. Why, oh why, didn\u2019t the writers level up to the genre\u2019s master\u2019s program?<\/p>\n

While some fans may opt for social media quizzes or binge-watching a new show, others choose to break out their go-to romantic comedies during a long weekend [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Not to say Anyone But You<\/em> is a total miss. Sweeney and Powell possess a natural onscreen charm, and Sweeney shows off her impressive physical humor skills on the airplane. With sharper material, they may have pulled this off. Amid a season full of heavy and heavy-handed winter fare, a trifling respite has its benefits. And a breezy group sing-along to an early \u201800s classic in the closing moments is a shrewd way to ensure audiences leave on a high note.<\/p>\n
