Now under the ownership of Microsoft, the gaming company will pay about $54 million as part of the settlement, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/calcivilrights.ca.gov\/2023\/12\/15\/civil-rights-department-announces-settlement-agreement-to-resolve-employment-discrimination-and-equal-pay-lawsuit-against-activision-blizzard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release from California\u2019s Civil Rights Department<\/a> (CRD). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The CRD (formerly known as the Department of Fair Employment and Housing or DFEH) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/22\/22588215\/activision-blizzard-lawsuit-sexual-harassment-discrimination-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed this lawsuit in July 2021<\/a>, alleging that Activision Blizzard had a \u201cfrat boy\u201d culture where women were subject to sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination. Following the suit, employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/7\/28\/22598410\/activision-blizzard-employee-walk-out-protest-sexism-discrimination-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walked out<\/a>, executives including then-Blizzard president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/8\/3\/22607356\/blizzard-president-leaving-harassment-protest-brack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J. Allen Brack<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/8\/3\/22608320\/blizard-jesse-meschuk-leave-company-hr-svp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blizzard\u2019s former SVP of HR<\/a> left the company, and, months later, <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported that CEO Bobby Kotick had known of sexual misconduct allegations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/11\/16\/22785457\/activision-blizzard-bobby-kotick-ceo-wall-street-journal-wsj-report-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">However, as part of the settlement agreement, the CRD said that \u201cno court or any independent investigation has substantiated any allegations\u201d\u00a0of sexual harassment at Activision Blizzard and that there wasn\u2019t evidence of wrongdoing by Kotick, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/15\/business\/dealbook\/california-activision-blizzard-sexual-harassment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>. (The company told the SEC last year that an internal investigation found \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/16\/23171447\/activision-blizzard-investigation-sec-filing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no evidence to suggest<\/a>\u201d that senior executives ignored allegations of gender harassment.) Following a series of regulatory hurdles, that deal finally closed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/10\/13\/23791235\/microsoft-activision-blizzard-acquisition-complete-finalized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in October<\/a>.
