Ok! While searching for the latest Rita Ora news, I found out surprisingly she hasn&#8217;t taken out any body part insurance policies. It&#8217;s definitely within her brand so why not, Rita??<\/p>\n<p>But what I did find was there are far too many of these articles on the web. The aim of this research is to take power away from all the listicles, collate all the <b>\u2018crazy celebrity body part insurance policies\u2019<\/b> together once and for all and maybe, just maybe, figure out <b>why it keeps happening<\/b>. I&#8217;ve made graphs. I&#8217;ve even put little watermarks on all the images. This was <b>a lot more complicated<\/b> than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Because this is such a lucrative clickbait topic, many policies are repeated across pages of articles, so I was stuck in <b>clickbait purgatory<\/b> for ages. <b>Nobody can properly source their shit.<\/b> I provided the <b>most reliable sources<\/b> I could find.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get into the listicles, let&#8217;s take a brief look at the <b>origins of celebrity body part insurance<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Elizabeth Hubbart in her journal article (<a href=\"https:\/\/heinonline.org\/HOL\/P?h=hein.journals\/conilj3&amp;i=277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1<\/a>), celebrity body part insurance can be traced back to <b>cast insurance<\/b>. The <b>first body part insured by a motion picture company was for Douglas Fairbanks Sr<\/b> in 1934, who had a \u2018<b>scarred face<\/b>\u2019 policy in case he damaged his good looks. There is one insurance claim I found that&#8217;s a bit earlier than this, but it wasn&#8217;t initiated by a film company. Presumably, it didn&#8217;t become popular until film companies started doing this more often.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/UDJpLK6.png\" width=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/><i><b>Figure 1 &#8211; research me obsessively<\/b><\/i><br \/>Selected quotes from Hubbart&#8217;s research. I don&#8217;t know why she says &#8216;Banderos&#8217; not Banderas<\/div>\n<p>Hubbart\u2019s article is mainly a case study into <i>Interview with a Vampire<\/i>, but <b>she does raise some relevant points:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li><b>Celebrity insurance was popularised by film companies<\/b> before it became a publicity stunt, and mostly involved the whole body rather than body parts;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>Insurance brokers could provide recommendations<\/b> for alternative scenes, stunts etc. if they felt they were potentially in danger of giving a massive pay-out;<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Some film companies have bought body part insurance for <b>celebrities with pre-existing conditions<\/b>.<\/li>\n<p><\/ol>\n<p>This was a promising start, so I looked a bit deeper.<\/p>\n<p>I searched <b>Google Scholar <\/b>because I have a degree and I need to make use of it \u2013 I put myself in debt for that fucking piece of paper \u2013 and there are <b>a handful of discussions on celebrity insurance<\/b>. I\u2019m hesitant to use the term \u2018research\u2019 since, like this post, <b>a lot of the sources are clickbait websites<\/b> and <b>most of the links have expired.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Still, I&#8217;m highlight this quote from a paper because I love the strong creepypasta vibes:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/6dX3Q0w.png\" width=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/><i><b>Figure 2 &#8211; But who was phone<\/b><\/i><br \/>Select quote from Dr Yuvraj Patil&#8217;s discussion essay on celebrity insurance (2012) (<a href=\"https:\/\/deliverypdf.ssrn.com\/delivery.php?ID=495104001002067125008067074020117081101069081061084031018005023028082088002114083101000003027026054116046003002020114019031090107048048080009078022115104090082025086039033001103118125116005100098064012126117122066102124026076107022075108126086117101&amp;EXT=pdf&amp;INDEX=TRUE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2<\/a>)<\/div>\n<p>As well as these studies, some studies looked at <b>cast insurance when making a movie<\/b>, <b>insurance as part of a brand\u2019s endorsement<\/b>, or a <b>brand taking out insurance in case a celebrity disgraces the brand\u2019s reputation<\/b>. While these were interesting, they&#8217;re not part of my focus as they were all cases that involved the whole body.<\/p>\n<p>So, according to the bits of history I found, there&#8217;s <b>likely many more body part insurance policies<\/b> that <b>haven&#8217;t made it to listicle status<\/b>. For the policies that are shared, they are shared again and again and again&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The <b>listicles I consulted<\/b> include Yahoo! News, Just Jared, Slate, TMZ, Newsweek, E! Online, Reuters, Time, BBC News, Evening Standard, Page Six, Goal.com, Hello Magazine, Mirror Online, Vogue, People Magazine and Vanity Fair. There is an infinite list of websites that posted the same content with <b>hyperlinks that led to these sites or each other<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>From my extensive research, I found <b>exactly 41 celebrity body part insurance claims<\/b> circulating on these listicles.<br \/><b>37 of these are either confirmed or currently undisputed.<\/b><br \/>The <b>remaining 5 claims are too dubious or 100% untrue<\/b>. I explain those in the findings section.<\/p>\n<p>The policies were mostly for <b>North American, European and Australian celebrities<\/b>. A small number were from <b>India<\/b> but those all stated the celebrity was only &#8216;approached&#8217; or &#8216;considering&#8217; a policy. I am sure that other continents have celebrities with body part insurance, but these aren\u2019t reported (there&#8217;s likely an English-speaking\/&#8221;western&#8221; bias causing this&#8230; if you know some celebs in your country with body part insurance, let me know!).<\/p>\n<p>One very surprising finding in my search was there was <b>one listicle website where I couldn\u2019t find a SINGLE article on this<\/b> \u2013 <b>Buzzfeed!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, I found a coffee-table book called <i>Infographica<\/i> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quercusbooks.co.uk\/titles\/martin-toseland\/infographica\/9781780877587\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">3<\/a>) that summarises the same regurgitated celeb insurance policies, but the authors <b>clearly<\/b> did not have as much free time as I did, because <b>a lot of the policies they included are lies<\/b>! <b>DON\u2019T get a life! <i>Do your research!!!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lj-spoiler\"><span class=\"lj-spoiler-head\"><span class=\"lj-spoiler-leftbracket\">[<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com\/javascript:void(0)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"18\" height=\"12\" class=\"flaticon flaticon--eye lj-spoiler-icon\" style=\"display: none; fill: currentColor\"><use xlink:href=\"#flaticon--eye\"\/><\/svg>Methods &#8211; how much time do you have<\/a><\/b><span class=\"lj-spoiler-rightbracket\">]<\/span><\/span><span class=\"lj-spoiler-body\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size:1.4em;\"><b>Methods \u2013 how much time do you have<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A shit ton of googling was my method<\/b>. It brought up a whopping <b>19.9 million search results<\/b>. After only a couple of pages, the listicles got <b>very repetitive<\/b> and I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone so I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I siphoned off all the celeb data into a spreadsheet under the following columns:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/l7n2eld.png\" width=\"600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/><b><i>Figure 3 &#8211; did you know Rita is one of the Dick Clark NYE hosts this year<\/i><\/b><br \/>Visual example of how I organised the data<\/div>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li><b>CELEBRITY NAME \u2013<\/b> I collected all the celebrities I found up until November 2023, so <b>results may vary<\/b> if anyone decides to replicate this in the future (lol. lmao even).<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>BODY PART INSURED \u2013<\/b> I ignored anyone who insured their whole body. This was always an actor getting insurance for a film. For example, <b>Daniel Craig<\/b> (a listicle fave) was discounted from this list as he insured his whole body, not a body part, for <i>Quantum of Solace<\/i>.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>AMOUNT (in today\u2019s money) \u2013<\/b> There&#8217;s <b>conflicting amounts<\/b> for older policies, so to keep some level of professionalism in what is essentially a longform shitpost I only listed amounts as a) <b>the most common ones shown<\/b>, and b) <b>equivalent to today\u2019s inflation rates<\/b> in USD.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>BROKER \u2013<\/b> I wanted to see who\u2019s responsible for these. This was the least interesting part to collect, but it turned out to be an <b>iceberg of massive tinfoil-hat proportions<\/b>. I&#8217;ll explain this later. For now, just keep an eye on it.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>AD\/SPONSOR\/REASON \u2013<\/b> most of the policies must have been <b>publicised for a reason<\/b>, so I figured they are either advertisements and\/or part of a sponsorship deal.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>YEAR \u2013<\/b> I was as accurate as possible; I used the<b> earliest possible mention<\/b> I could find. Some of them were blatantly incorrect, such as with actors who were long dead before Just Jared reported they had insurance, so to avoid messing up the data, I have stated the year for those kinds of entries as \u2018unknown\u2019.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>SOURCE \u2013<\/b> a lot of listicles were written so the writer could pay their rent, so the sources aren&#8217;t great&#8230; but they&#8217;re the <b>earliest<\/b> ones I could find. They do not necessarily mean the source is correct. Here is a list of the most commonly shared celebrity policies that<b> are lies, fairytales and fallacies<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: DOLLY PARTON<\/b> did NOT insure her breasts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/a38909479\/dolly-parton-insured-breasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(4)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: JULIA ROBERTS<\/b> did NOT insure her smile. She said, \u201cI mean, if my smile was insured, there would be someone at my house on a nightly basis saying, \u2018You need to floss longer.\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/etcanada.com\/news\/886477\/julia-roberts-jokes-about-smile-insurance-rumours-and-explains-why-she-hasnt-been-in-a-rom-com-in-20-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(5)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: JENNIFER LOPEZ<\/b> did NOT insure her buttocks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/uk\/life-and-culture\/articles\/a30167\/mariah-carey-jennifer-lopez-doly-parton-celebrities-insured-body-parts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(6)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: AMITABH BACHCHAN <\/b>did NOT insure his voice. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rediff.com\/movies\/nov\/06ab.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">7<\/a>)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: JOHN ABRAHAM <\/b>did NOT insure his buttocks. He has reportedly been approached to do this. This has been twisted to say that he accepted it. He hasn&#8217;t. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmibeat.com\/bollywood\/features\/2014\/celebrities-who-got-body-assets-insured-bollywood\/articlecontent-pf50027-142398.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">8<\/a>)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIES: TOM JONES<\/b> did NOT insure his chest hair. His representatives say they \u201chope no one takes this kind of reporting seriously&#8221;. TOO DAMN LATE. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsurance.com\/article\/20080217\/story\/100024136\/tom-jones-chest-hair-coverage-a-matter-of-urban-legend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(9)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>LIKELY LIES: KYLIE MINOGUE<\/b> hasn\u2019t spoken about insuring her buttocks, yet this is claimed to be true. Given the dates of the sources, it appears to be a publicity stunt in connection with her work with British artist Katerina Jebb. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/showbiz\/celebrity-news\/kylie-minogue-bares-her-bottom-for-insurance-video-8182190.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(10)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/ol>\n<p>I also found a lot of sources that said <b>yeah, this person has weird insurance!<\/b> But <b>the details were sus<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li><b>DOUBLE DUTY: DAVID BECKHAM<\/b> claimed to have insured his legs multiple times \u2013 the first time was for $70 million according to Ripley\u2019s Believe It Or Not (I&#8217;ll choose &#8216;Not&#8217;), and the second time was what I logged in the spreadsheet which was the record-breaking $195 million. Maybe next year we&#8217;ll get a new amount. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t7CtPt5cW78\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(11)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>DO NOT FEMINIZE MY TONGUE:<\/b> Despite <b>GENE SIMMONS&#8217;S<\/b> policy circulating with no evidence, I am inclined to believe it since he is very protective of it. When asked about <b>Miley Cyrus\u2019s tongue pose<\/b>, he said, \u201cIt was okay. But that was a girl\u2019s version. It\u2019s like girls\u2019 basketball. It\u2019s as good as girls get at basketball. But you can\u2019t play with the guys.\u201d Ah yes the two genders, Kiss Tongue and Bangerz Tongue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/qa-gene-simmons-on-mileys-tongue-and-his-new-kiss-book-172542\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(12)<\/a><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>WE&#8217;RE JUST NORMAL MEN:<\/b> <b>JEFF BECK<\/b> got finger insurance after hacking off the tip of one of them. Nearly all the sources are <b>poor,<\/b> and for a significant amount of them, there were <b>no reliable sources at all<\/b>. Many celebrities have <b>varying amounts of money<\/b> attached to them depending on which website you see.<\/p>\n<p>Some policies were for <b>different body parts depending on the listicle<\/b>; for example, there was no unanimous decision on whether <b>Keith Richards<\/b> insured his whole hand or just his middle finger. The hand policy was the most common, so I listed that one. But yeah, many inconsistencies occurred which made this <strike>moment of hyperfixation<\/strike> research difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone can be split into roughly three categories:<\/p>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li><b>THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN HAIRSPRAY:<\/b> Procter &amp; Gamble (who own Head &amp; Shoulders, Braun and Gillette) seem to like taking out insurance policies for their celebrities as a <b>publicity stunt.<\/b><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>NOTHING&#8217;S GONNA EVER KEEP YOU DOWN:<\/b> Most sports celebrities seem to take out insurance policies because of the <b>volatile nature of their job<\/b>.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b>I WANNA WALK LIKE TYRA:<\/b> The exception to these two categories started with Formula 1&#8217;s <b>Fernando Alonso<\/b>, of course. He, like all the other celebs left over in this list, believe that <b>their body parts are ICONIC! enough <\/b>to be insured for millions. (stream Madison Rose)<\/li>\n<p><\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:1.4em;\"><b>Now&#8230; back to&#8230; this bitch that had a lot to say. Lloyd&#8217;s of London, what&#8217;s good<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So Lloyd&#8217;s of London came up a lot.<b> Tin-foil hats on for this section.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Lloyd&#8217;s seems like a creepy place. Where does all this money go? Are these claims even real? Who can never be sure? <b>Further investigation was needed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/IO6Ll0T.png\" width=\"500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/><i>one of these people is responsible for a folder named &#8216;david lee roth &#8211; penis&#8217;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>First off, who are they:<\/b> Lloyd&#8217;s is an insurance marketplace that is <b>governed by British law,<\/b> specifically the Lloyd&#8217;s Act 1871. It&#8217;s been around in London since the <b>17th century <\/b>and has offices in the USA. In all their business, <b>t<\/b><b>here&#8217;s brokers, underwriters and Names<\/b>. <b>Brokers<\/b> act as the agencies of the policymakers and <b>underwriters<\/b> are liable for the claims. Anyone who takes out a policy at Lloyd&#8217;s is called a <b>Name<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>For any boat stans out there, you may know Lloyd&#8217;s as they used to insure lots of marine stuff, and they proudly say on their website they <b>insured the Titanic<\/b>. <u><i><b>ALLEGEDLY<\/b><\/i><\/u> however (don&#8217;t sue me), <b>they insured the Titanic AFTER it sank<\/b>. A book written by an insider reported that a New York colleague sent a telegraph instructing them to quickly insure the ship, <b>before the news spread across the UK <\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthaboutlloyds.com\/news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">15<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><b>The more that I read about Lloyd&#8217;s, the weirder it got<\/b>. I&#8217;ll stick to the main events:<\/p>\n<ol><\/p>\n<li>Lloyd&#8217;s <b>almost collapsed in the 1990s from fraud<\/b> as they announced a <b>record-breaking loss for them of at least $800 million<\/b> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthaboutlloyds.com\/fraud\/10minutes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">16<\/a>). They had <b>hidden their losses<\/b> from Names and the rest of the market.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Lloyd&#8217;s <b>tried to protect their top Names<\/b> by decreasing their assets, recruiting new Names to get more assets to absorb the losses while the <b>top Names departed unharmed<\/b> (a <b>pyramid scheme<\/b>). Lloyd&#8217;s called existing Names to cover their losses, and <b>thousands of Names were bankrupted<\/b> because of this.<span class=\"lj-spoiler\"><span class=\"lj-spoiler-head\"><span class=\"lj-spoiler-leftbracket\">[<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com\/javascript:void(0)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"18\" height=\"12\" class=\"flaticon flaticon--eye lj-spoiler-icon\" style=\"display: none; fill: currentColor\"><use xlink:href=\"#flaticon--eye\"\/><\/svg>tw: suicide mention<\/a><\/b><span class=\"lj-spoiler-rightbracket\">]<\/span><\/span><span class=\"lj-spoiler-body\">At least 30 Names are believed to have taken their own lives because of the cost.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>In 2012, it was reported that about <b>15,000 Names were linked to asbestos-related claims<\/b> in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The US Senate set up legislation to <b>deal with all the claims of asbestos poisoning<\/b> and prevent <b>bankrupting all the Names, descendants of Names and insurers<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/hp\/front\/asbestos-may-cost-lloyds-names-ps1m-7179798.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">17<\/a>).<\/li>\n<p><\/ol>\n<p>In summary, <b>they have a lot of shit to clean up and they&#8217;ve been cleaning for decades.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The only &#8220;scholarly&#8221; article I found on Lloyd&#8217;s of London and its celebrity assets was in <b>Executive Intelligence Review Magazine<\/b>, which was <b>founded by tinfoil-hat supreme Lyndon LaRouche<\/b>. For those who aren\u2019t up to date with the aluminium collective, the LaRouche movement was a<b> massive driving force<\/b> behind the conspiracy that <b>Princess Diana was killed by the Royal Family<\/b> and <b>Queen Elizabeth II was behind 9\/11<\/b> (I told you this would get weird). BUT I zoned in on this graph (Figure 9) that shows the number of Names in the 70s and 80s was very high (there were tax advantages before the asbestos fraud dropped), and then the <b>Names dropped significantly in the early 90s from the reporting of the fraud.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Scroll back up to Figure 7 &#8211; the numbers of celebrity Names are most common in the 00s and 2010s. Hmm. <i><b>Hmmmmm.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:1.4em;\"><b>So wtf does asbestos have to do with celebrities? <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve already got your tin-foil hats on, <b>so keep them on for a minute longer<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Is this Lloyd&#8217;s way of rehabilitating their image via celebrity? There&#8217;s <b>hundreds of studies<\/b> on the impact of celebrity on brand image and profits, and <b>Lloyd&#8217;s were desperate to recruit more Names<\/b>. Rather than the companies taking out insurance to protect themselves against a celebrity\u2019s damaged reputation, is it possible that this is just a popular way of Lloyd&#8217;s using Names to <b>promote itself to potential new Names AND protect itself against further damage? <\/b>It&#8217;s financially beneficial for the celebrity too: for example, becoming a Name means <b>you can use capital twice<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/the7circles.uk\/becoming-a-lloyds-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">19<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>So, as long as the celeb hasn&#8217;t googled them, it&#8217;s fine to take a silly little moneymaking policy, right? RIGHT?<\/p>\n<p>The next celebrity to get out an insurance policy under Lloyd&#8217;s is getting a <b>bombastic side-eye<\/b> from me.
