Meta says its fact-checking is intended to address misinformation, so effectively, users will be able to decide how much they want to see controversial topics on the site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The controls have three levels: \u201cDon\u2019t reduce,\u201d \u201cReduce,\u201d and \u201cReduce more.\u201d While none of the choices can hide content entirely, they will affect the ranking of posts that are \u201cfound to contain false or partly false information, altered content, or missing context.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">To get to the setting from Threads, users will need to tap the two lines in the upper-right corner from the profile tab, then Account &gt; Other account settings (which takes you to Instagram) &gt; Content preferences &gt; Reduced by fact-checking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The concept, on its face, feels really compelling. It could essentially be a \u201cdrama\u201d filter, and who hasn\u2019t wanted that in some facet of their life? Meta said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/social-media\/instagram-censor-fact-check-option-setting-ig-palestine-palestinian-rcna129484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement to <em>NBC News<\/em><\/a> that the options are intended to give users \u201cmore power to control the algorithm that ranks posts in their feed,\u201d adding that it\u2019s responding to users\u2019 demands for \u201ca greater ability to decide what they see on our apps.\u201d  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>NBC News<\/em>\u00a0pointed to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C0xP9Suufz5\/?ig_rid=ac500445-5430-4275-8aab-b371b5886ad6&amp;img_index=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post with thousands of likes<\/a>\u00a0saying the change is intended to censor content related to the Israel-Hamas War. Whether that\u2019s true or not, there\u2019s clearly plenty of room for censorship with a tool that invites users to be complicit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Meta uses third-party fact-checkers to rate content on Instagram and Facebook as factual or not, and what they determine now applies indirectly to Threads content. No massive social networks have found the silver bullet that solves the issue, and in some cases, their efforts have only stirred up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23929233\/lawrence-lessig-free-speech-first-amendment-ai-content-moderation-decoder-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anger and suspicion<\/a> about their motives or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/4\/23783822\/free-speech-ruling-missouri-v-biden-dhs-fbi-cisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised questions<\/a> about the involvement of the federal government. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But Meta has to moderate its platform, and not only because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/10\/11\/23912993\/meta-israel-hamas-european-commission-digital-services-act-dsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laws that require it<\/a> in the European Union, nor the US\u2019 own continued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/9\/29\/23895867\/supreme-court-texas-florida-moderation-social-media-conservative-bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulation efforts<\/a>.
