The \u2018Lord of the Rings\u2019 actor, 59, who played Gollum in the trio of fantasy epic films, was slammed in 2018 when he declared actors should be able to play any part they wanted \u2013 and added he defies people not to \u201ctap their foot\u201d to Michael Jackson<\/a>\u2019s music despite the paedophile accusations that dogged the late \u2018Bad\u2019 singer. <\/p>\n

Andy told The Independent: \u201cYou can be cancelled for anything now, literally anything, and what I really despise is trial by media. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s ruined more people\u2019s lives and should not be allowed. There should be a proper course of law, where charges are made, people go through the legal process, and it should not be allowed to proliferate. <\/p>\n

\u201cBecause people\u2019s lives can be devastated. Sometimes, because of what they\u2019ve done, it requires that, but the fact of the matter is, once it\u2019s happened, that\u2019s it. There\u2019s no going back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nHe said about the issue of people being publicly accused of offences they deny and the debate over whether artists accused of crimes should still be admired for their work: \u201cI think it can certainly damage their lives for a long time. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cI suppose, really, the thing is: can you still enjoy the art they\u2019ve created? <\/p>\n

\n\u201cI think, without going into specifics \u2013 I don\u2019t want to get myself cancelled \u2013 but put it this way: when Michael Jackson\u2019s music starts to come on, I defy anyone to not tap their foot to it. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cAnd if your body won\u2019t let you cancel it… but yeah, can art transcend the artist? I don\u2019t know.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nIn 2018, Andy weighed in on Scarlett Johansson\u2019s decision to star in \u2013 then pull out of \u2013 playing a transgender man in the planned project \u2018Rug and Tug\u2019 amid a backlash over a non-trans actor taking the role. <\/p>\n

\nThe actor told Variety he \u201cvehemently\u201d disagreed with the criticism of her of the actress, saying: \u201cActors should be able to play anything.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nHe added to The Independent about the issue: \u201cRegardless of the colour of your skin, regardless of how tall you are or short you are or what sex you are, regardless of how you identify, you should have the ability to play anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
