Both Greece and Turkey claim to be the originators of the recipe. According to Wiki, the oldest known recipe that resembles baklava came from the Romans. You know that it\u2019s a winning recipe if it\u2019s remained popular for that many centuries!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s made with flaky layers of buttered phyllo pastry stuffed with walnuts. Honey syrup is poured over the top so that every bite is deliciously sweet. It\u2019s moist and flavorful, and if you\u2019re anything like me, you won\u2019t be able to resist reaching for another piece.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ingredient-list\">Ingredient List<\/h2>\n<p>I love this recipe because it doesn\u2019t have a long list of ingredients. Only a handful that create the most amazing flavor and texture! Exact measurements are in the recipe card below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Walnuts<\/strong>:\u00a0Add a nutty flavor and crunch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spices<\/strong>: Cinnamon and ground cloves are added for some warm, cozy flavor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salted Butter<\/strong>:\u00a0Helps bind the phyllo dough and also adds richness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phyllo Dough<\/strong>:\u00a0Thin,\u00a0flaky pastry used to make baklava.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"block-tip cwp-inner cwp-large\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading block-tip__title\">Thaw the Dough<\/h2>\n<p>Phyllo pastry needs to thaw before you can use it. Let it thaw for at least 1 hour at room temperature or overnight in the fridge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-honey-syrup\"><strong>Honey Syrup:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong>:\u00a0Dissolves the sugar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Granulated Sugar<\/strong>:\u00a0Sweetens the syrup.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whole Cloves<\/strong>:\u00a0Add a touch of sweetness and aroma.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/p\/cinnamon-sticks-0-75oz-good-38-gather-8482\/-\/A-77574739#lnk=sametab\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinnamon Stick<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0Infuses the syrup with warm,\u00a0inviting spice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Honey<\/strong>:\u00a0So the syrup is nice and sweet and has a wonderful sticky texture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Orange Extract<\/strong>:\u00a0Adds a zesty citrusy flavor.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.target.com\/p\/adams-extract-pure-orange-extract-1-5-fl-oz\/-\/A-90485754#lnk=sametab\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lemon Juice<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0Adds a touch of tartness,\u00a0balancing the sweetness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-baklava-recipe\">Baklava Recipe<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve broken up this recipe into 3 simple parts- preparing the phyllo pastry, assembling the baklava, and making the honey syrup to coat it with. It\u2019s a lot easier to make than you\u2019d think, and so worth it once you try a piece!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Preheat Oven: <\/strong>Preheat your oven to 330 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nut Mixture: <\/strong>Place the walnuts, cinnamon, and cloves in a food processor and pulse until chopped.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Melt Butter: <\/strong>Melt the butter in a pan or microwave.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cut Phyllo Pastry: <\/strong>Cut the phyllo pastry in half so that you have 2, 9-inch wide pieces<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assembly<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Layer Dough: <\/strong>Brush the bottom of a 9\u00d713 baking dish with the melted butter. Lay down two sheets of phyllo dough to cover the pan\u2019s entire bottom and lightly brush the top with butter. Top with 2 more sheets of phyllo and brush with butter. Repeat this until you have 8 layers of phyllo dough in the bottom of the on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add Nut Mixture: <\/strong>Sprinkle 1\/3 of the walnut mixture into the pan. Top with 2 sheets of phyllo dough and brush with butter. Add two more sheets of phyllo dough and brush with butter, making it 4 sheets total on top of the walnuts. Repeat this process once more so you have another layer of walnuts followed by 4 more sheets of phyllo dough and butter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repeat: <\/strong>Sprinkle the remaining 1\/3 of the walnut mixture over the top of the phyllo dough. Top with 2 sheets of phyllo and brush with butter. Use up the remaining phyllo dough and butter until you run out of phyllo dough.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cut: <\/strong>Cut the baklava three times down the long length so you have 4 equal sections. Then make cuts diagonally so you have diamond-shaped pieces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bake: <\/strong>Place the baking dish into the oven and bake uncovered for about an hour, or until it is puffed and very golden on the top. Close to the 50-60 minute range, keep a close eye on it so the top doesn\u2019t get too dark.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"block-tip cwp-inner cwp-large\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading block-tip__title\">For Crispier Baklava:<\/h2>\n<p>To keep the baklava crispy, lightly dab the melted butter over the phyllo pastry. Too much butter can make the dessert soggy. Also, make sure that the syrup is cool before you pour it over the hot baklava.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honey Syrup<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Prepare Syrup: <\/strong>While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. Heat the water, sugar, cloves, and cinnamon stick in a small pot over high heat just until the sugar is dissolved. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the honey, orange extract, and lemon juice. Set aside to cool.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pour On Top: <\/strong>When the baklava has finished baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cool syrup over the top. This will ensure your pieces are easy to lift out and separate. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Cook Low and Slow: <\/strong>Some recipes will have baklava baked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for less time, but the best baklava is baked lower and slower. This results in a crispier pastry with that beautiful golden brown color.
