Virgin River<\/em><\/a> fans can expect a lot more romance and fun when the show returns for season 6.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my intention was never to have subsequent seasons match the intensity of season five,\u201d showrunner Patrick Sean Smith<\/strong> told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> <\/a>in December 2023. \u201cI would say that going into season 6, my intention is to have it feel lighter, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not going to be complicated with the signature Virgin River<\/em> twists and turns<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith noted that \u201cleaning more into the romance of the series\u201d is also one thing he\u2019s \u201cexcited\u201d to prioritize as well: \u201cJust giving the \u201cfans what they want,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Virgin River<\/em> premiered in 2017 on Netflix and followed Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge<\/strong><\/a>) after she moved to a small California town while mourning the loss of her husband. For the five subsequent seasons, viewers have watched the character fall in love, get engaged, face a pregnancy loss and discover the identity of her biological father. The rest of the town, meanwhile, has dealt with surprise pregnancies, natural disasters and a massive drug ring \u2014 something Smith said will take a backseat for season 6.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think probably moving forward, the drug story engines will kind of fall to the wayside a little bit, which always did feel more extreme,\u201d he explained to THR<\/em>. \u201cI appreciate it, especially in the first season. \u2026 But it did feel like it was starting to overtake the show a little bit, and when you\u2019re dealing with bigger physical stakes like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith, who took over as showrunner from Sue Tenney<\/strong> before season 5, explained that he never had the \u201cintention\u201d of making sure season 6 matched the \u201cintensity\u201d<\/a> of the ones before it. Instead, he hopes to explore more of Mel and Jack\u2019s (Martin Henderson<\/strong>) romance, deal with Jack\u2019s PTSD, learn more about Doc\u2019s (Tim Matheson<\/strong>) prognosis and see where the romantic future lies for the rest of Virgin River\u2019s<\/em> major players.<\/p>\n

When Does Production on \u2018Virgin River\u2019 Season 6 Start?<\/h3>\n

The first half of season 6\u2019s scripts were completed when the WGA went on strike in May 2023. Now that the strike has ended, Smith told Deadline<\/em><\/a> that the writers are crafting the back half of the season and production is set to begin in early 2024.<\/p>\n

Breckenridge, meanwhile, told Deadline<\/em> she\u2019s \u201cbeen hearing\u201d that filming will start<\/a> in the spring \u201cas the Vancouver weather allows.\u201d (Virgin River<\/em> films in Vancouver, Canada.)<\/p>\n

While the official cast list hasn\u2019t been released, season 5 story lines left big cliffhangers for Breckenridge\u2019s Mel, Matheson\u2019s Doc, Colin Lawrence\u2019s<\/strong> Preacher and Benjamin Hollingsworth\u2019s<\/strong> Brady, leading fans to believe those actors will reprise their roles.<\/p>\n

Smith also teased \u201cmore Mel and Jack\u201d for season 6, which promises Henderson\u2019s return, as well as more on Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale<\/strong>) and Denny\u2019s (Kai Bradbury<\/strong>) pregnancy.<\/p>\n
