During a lengthy chat about their \u201cdysfunctional\u201d family, Mackenzie Phillips<\/strong> <\/a>opened up about why she chose to forgive late father John Phillips after the pair\u2019s decade-long abusive and incestuous relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad was something else,\u201d Mackenzie, 64, said during a Monday, December 4, sit-down for sister Chynna Phillips<\/strong> Baldwin\u2019s<\/strong> <\/a>YouTube<\/a> channel. \u201cAnd I get a lot of criticism, and a lot of trolling online, for having forgiveness in my heart. Forgiveness, because forgiving is for me, not for the other person. And forgiving doesn\u2019t mean I cosign or agree with what I\u2019m forgiving him for. It\u2019s very complicated and yet I am at peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mackenzie previously claimed in her 2009 memoir, High on Arrival<\/em>, that her abusive relationship with her father began after he raped her<\/a> at the age of 19 on the night she married ex-husband Jeff Sessler<\/strong>. The relationship then allegedly became consensual for nearly a decade, coming to an end once Mackenzie discovered she was pregnant but wasn\u2019t sure if John was the baby\u2019s father. She later got an abortion. (Mackenzie was married to Sessler from 1979 to 1981 before moving on with Shane Fontayne<\/strong>, whom she wed in 1986. The pair welcomed son Shane Barakan<\/strong> in 1987 before their 2000 split. She later wed Keith Levenson<\/strong> in 2005.)<\/p>\n

Chynna, 55 \u2014 who is married to Billy Baldwin<\/strong> \u2014 agreed with Mackenzie\u2019s take on their father, sharing that there were \u201cso many different levels\u201d to who he was. \u201cObviously he\u2019s an amazing songwriter and, you know I loved his laugh, and yet there was this whole other side to Dad that was, I mean, kind of, like a monster,\u201d she added. (John died of heart failure in 2001 at the age of 64.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhile Hollywood may appear to be all glitz and glam on the surface, the industry has seen its fair share of\u00a0scandals\u00a0through the years. The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0and the\u00a0New Yorker first published investigative pieces in 2017 that accused disgruntled movie producer Harvey Weinstein of decades of sexual assault and harassment. Soon after, Weinstein stood trial and was [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When Mackenzie noted that the Mama\u2019s & Papa\u2019s singer had a \u201cvery, very dark, dark side\u201d to him, Chynna replied, \u201cHe was so dark, and you just didn\u2019t know who you were going to get. It was very unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Mackenzie released her memoir in 2009, she and Chynna were publicly at odds<\/a>, with Chynna claiming that she knew about the incest but wasn\u2019t made aware of Mackenzie\u2019s plan to detail it in her book. At the time, Chynna said she would have liked\u00a0\u201ca little family conference\u201d prior to the memoir\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that we can talk about what feels safe for you, what doesn\u2019t feel safe for you,\u201d she explained to her sister during a joint interview in 2009. \u201cBut you know what? That may have not have been realistic in our family. That may not have worked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tDanny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in September 2023 after being found guilty on two counts of forcible rape that May. Ahead of his sentencing, several people close to the actor, including his wife, Bijou Phillips, penned letters to Judge Charlaine Olmedo advocating for Masterson\u2019s character. In her letter, Phillips [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

John was the father of five children. He shared Mackenzie and son Jeffrey Phillips<\/strong> with ex-wife Susan Adams<\/strong>. He later married second wife Michelle Phillips<\/strong><\/a> in 1962 and the pair welcomed daughter Chynna before their divorce seven years later. In 1972, he tied the knot with\u00a0Genevi\u00e8ve Wa\u00efte<\/strong>\u00a0and they welcomed son Tamerlane Phillips<\/strong> and daughter Bijou Phillips<\/strong> <\/a>before calling it quits in 1985. (John married his fourth wife, Farnaz Arasteh<\/strong>, in 1995.)<\/p>\n

While Mackenzie faced tension from most of her family members after her claims against John, she and Chynna were ultimately able to make amends. \u201cWhen I stood by you I meant it with all my heart and I believed you and I want you to know I was proud of you for coming out,\u201d she said during the duo\u2019s YouTube conversation.<\/p>\n

Chynna noted that the Phillips\u2019 were labeled one of\u00a0the \u201cmost dysfunctional\u201d families<\/a> in Hollywood. While discussing their struggled, the singer referenced the fatal accident on the set of brother-in-law Alec Baldwin\u2019s<\/strong> Rust<\/em> film and sister Bijou, 43, filing for divorce from estranged husband Danny Masterson<\/strong> after he was sentenced to 30 years in prison on two counts of rape earlier this year.<\/p>\n
