Hearst \u2014 which publishes the likes of <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>, <em>Esquire<\/em>, and the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> \u2014 has announced that it has acquired Puzzmo, a puzzle gaming platform led by indie developers Zach Gage and Orta Therox. The move puts Hearst directly up against the gaming efforts of <em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times<\/em>. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. As a comparison, in 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/1\/31\/22911274\/wordle-new-york-times-free-word-game-acquisition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The<\/em> <em>New York Times<\/em> acquired <em>Wordle<\/em><\/a> for \u201can undisclosed price in the low seven figures.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Puzzmo launched in a limited beta form in October and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23929222\/puzzmo-newspaper-games-crossword-zach-gage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is billed as a reimagining of the classic newspaper games page<\/a>. It features a number of notable Gage-designed titles like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/30\/21114098\/spelltower-plus-iphone-ipad-zach-gage-interview-app-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>SpellTower<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/10\/13\/13262994\/really-bad-chess-zach-gage-iphone-ipad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Really Bad Chess<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/3\/18\/14961332\/typeshift-iphone-ipad-word-game-zach-gage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Typeshift<\/em><\/a>, along with a streamlined daily crossword puzzle. The site also features community features like leaderboards and multiplayer options. \u201cThere\u2019s great stuff out there,\u201d Gage told me in October of the newspaper games space. \u201cBut there isn\u2019t this holistic place where people can go and build a community around these games.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As part of the deal, Gage and Therox will continue to develop Puzzmo, which currently operates as a website, with a mobile app in the works. But Puzzmo will also begin rolling out to readers of more than 50 Hearst publications, including the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> and <em>Popular Mechanics.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Additionally, Hearst will be licensing out Puzzmo games to other publishers. According to the company, these deals \u201care structured as rev-shares on both subscription and advertising revenue.\u201d Each publisher gets a branded version of the Puzzmo site, complete with the same library of games.
