The long-running punk band announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.punkindrublicfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last slate of shows of its Final Tour<\/a>, ensuring the group behind songs like \u201cLinoleum\u201d and \u201cBob\u201d will go out on a high note \u2013 even though frontman <strong>Fat Mike<\/strong> isn\u2019t at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sober right now,\u201d Fat Mike, 56, tells <em>Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively, explaining that he\u2019s currently not drinking or using drugs. \u201cI do that every six months. I\u2019ll take a few months off. And I love being sober right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the man behind songs like \u201cDrugs Are Good,\u201d \u201cI am an Alcoholic,\u201d and \u201cEverything in Moderation (Especially Moderation),\u201d sobriety would be the one strange bedfellow for the sex-positive and openly queer Fat Mike. However, since the mid-2010s, NOFX\u2019s bassist, vocalist, songwriter and mouthpiece found a healthy balance between sobriety and partying. It\u2019s a balance he\u2019s carrying into 2024 when the band takes its final bow in Denver, New York (<a href=\"https:\/\/fatwreck.com\/pages\/tour-dates?filter=nofx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tickets on sale now<\/a>), and their hometown of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been sober for over a month. I\u2019m losing weight and I\u2019m bike riding 10-15 miles a day,\u201d he tells <em>Us<\/em>. Fat Mike recently relocated to Las Vegas, the site of The Punk Rock Museum, an extensive collection of historical items and cultural memorabilia that provides visitors with a unique, hands-on experience. When he\u2019s not working on the museum, helping to run the beloved independent music label <a href=\"https:\/\/fatwreck.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fat Wreck Chords<\/a>, or working with <a href=\"https:\/\/fatwreck.com\/collections\/codefendants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Codefendants<\/strong> <\/a>(his new \u201ccrime wave\u201d side-project), Fat Mike says he\u2019s keeping busy by staying away from the \u201csin\u201d of Sin City. He lives 20 minutes from the Strip in a \u201cquiet Mormon neighborhood\u201d and spends his time hiking, biking, golfing, and taking in a Vegas show like <em>The Beatles Love by Cirque Soleil<\/em> (which he says he\u2019s seen eight times).<\/p>\n<div class=\"link-related article link-related__with-thumb\">\n\t\t\t<a class=\"article__thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/pictures\/travis-barkers-health-scares-injuries-through-the-years\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:56.25%;\" class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"article__content\">\n<h3 class=\"article__title\">\n\t\t\t<a class=\"article__title-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/pictures\/travis-barkers-health-scares-injuries-through-the-years\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"related-badge\">Related: <\/span>Travis Barker\u2019s Health Ups and Downs Through the Years<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tThrough the years, Travis Barker has faced many health concerns including a plane crash and later a hospitalization shortly after his wedding to Kourtney Kardashian. In September 2008, the musician was on a plane that killed four people and left Barker with third-degree burns covering 65 percent of his body. Following the scary situation, the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m doing all kinds of stuff that, when you\u2019re hungover or drinking, you don\u2019t want to do. I woke up at seven today and exercised on my trampoline, and then I went for a half-hour walk with my lady,\u201d he tells <em>Us<\/em>. \u201cSo I love sober time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then when I go back to drinking and using, those times are great too,\u201d he adds. \u201cThat\u2019s when you really bond with people. That\u2019s when you make the best bad decisions of your life. You tend not to make bad decisions when you\u2019re sober. If you don\u2019t have things you regret, then what the f\u2014k?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regrets? Fat Mike has had a few after spending four decades on the road with NOFX (<strong>Eric Melvin<\/strong>, <strong>Aaron \u201cEl Hefe\u201d Abeyta<\/strong>, and <strong>Erik \u201cSmelly\u201d Sandin<\/strong>). From there, everything seemed good. <strong>Travis Barker<\/strong> even spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/blink-182-37-1206817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NME<\/a> about how he was excited for \u201cPunk Rock Clich\u00e9\u201d to come out, but the track was never released as a single and was left off the band\u2019s 2016 album, <em>California<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Fat Mike stressed to Spin that he wasn\u2019t mad, saying that he was going to ghostwrite the song and be done with it. However, he noted that the timing might have been odd, with Skiba joining as DeLonge was leaving. \u201cI could see how someone saying \u2018Oh, you had to get Fat Mike to write a song for you\u201d would be something they didn\u2019t want to come out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>What might have been a last-minute business decision (representatives for Blink-182 didn\u2019t immediately respond to Us\u2019 request for comment) led to some confusion on Fat Mike\u2019s end, but he tells <em>Us<\/em> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/travis-barker-felt-heaviness-before-mending-blink-182-friendships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">things are all good<\/a> between him and the band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to see them [Blink-182] the other night. They were all so friendly and I\u2019m just happy that we\u2019re all friends,\u201d Fat Mike tells <em>Us<\/em>. \u201cI didn\u2019t start talking about that [song] to put a wedge between our friendship. I just wanted to \u2014 NOFX did that song because that song had to come out. If they didn\u2019t want to put it out, I was going. So I figured I\u2019d tell the story, but there was no ill will. But, it was great to see all those guys. They\u2019re all good dudes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NOFX - Punk Rock Cliche (Official Audio)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4ShUM5S4cXE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Though Fat Mike declared Blink-182 \u2019s version superior, NOFX\u2019s \u201cPunk Rock Clich\u00e9\u201d is the perfect example of why the band has endured for forty years, displaying musical elements found throughout the band\u2019s oeuvre. It eschews choruses for recurring lyrical themes (as heard in \u201cBob,\u201d \u201cLinoleum\u201d and practically every other NOFX song). There\u2019s the signature Fat Mike bassline, a vibrant sound that powers other tracks like \u201cThe Idiots Are Taking Over,\u201d \u201cThe Desperation\u2019s Gone\u201d and \u201cWhoops, I OD\u2019d.\u201d Sandlin\u2019s drumming is as intense as when the band dropped <em>Ribbed<\/em> in 1991. Melvin and Hefe\u2019s guitars surge like skateboards on fire, harkening back to the work that made <em>Punk In Drublic<\/em> a modern classic.<\/p>\n<p>While Fat Mike has reaffirmed his friendship with Barker, DeLonge, and <strong>Mark Hoppus<\/strong>, there remains some unresolved misery business between him and <strong>Hayley Williams<\/strong>. The British designer, who died in December 2022 at the age of 81, got her start in the early \u201870s with her romantic and business partner, Malcolm McLaren. We\u2019re charging a lot of money for the first time ever, but no one\u2019s really complaining about it \u2018cause the last show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Mike will always have that sardonic streak that has made him one of punk\u2019s greatest frontmen, he tells <em>Us<\/em> that the first run of farewell gigs has left him feeling emotional. \u201cYou\u2019re saying goodbye to the people you\u2019ve known for so long. But you know what feels so good is that, and why it\u2019s so emotional, is because it\u2019s real,\u201d he says. \u201cBands do \u2018farewell tours\u2019 all the time, and that\u2019s not what this is. That will be the last time we play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, how is Fat Mike feeling now that the final dates have been revealed? \u201cMy mood\u2019s really good,\u201d he says before quickly adding, \u201cIt\u2019s such a weird feeling. No one gets to go through this. Nobody gets to say goodbye and thank you. It\u2019s kind of like being there for your wake, and I feel so privileged and honored to be able to say goodbye to fans who have been supporting us for so many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Fat Mike laughs at the thought of NOFX throwing its own memorial: \u201cAnd we\u2019re charging for flowers. Fat Mike hasn\u2019t decided on what will be the last song NOFX ever plays (\u201cI can\u2019t answer that,\u201d he says), but he does share that the final show will see the band play a new song that no one\u2019s ever heard, and no one will ever hear it until their last show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve written a song that is very important to me, and it\u2019s extremely heartfelt,\u201d he shares while getting slightly choked up while thinking about it. \u201cIt\u2019s in me. I\u2019ve been working on it for a while. I don\u2019t know if I can play it without getting too emotional. And we\u2019re only going to play it once, and it\u2019s going to be at our last show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before that happens, there will be plenty of new NOFX music for fans to hear. \u201cI just finished the artwork for <em>Half Album<\/em>,\u201d says Fat Mike, the final songs from the Single Album and Double Album recording sessions.<\/p>\n<p>From there, NOFX has \u201can album that we\u2019re not finished with,\u201d says Fat Mike. He noted that there are about 15 songs, with about 30 more that are unfinished. \u201cI don\u2019t know \u2013 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll be recording more songs with [NOFX]. Playing live, at one point, was not. \u201cI was needing to get loaded before I went on stage in order to have a good time,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd we couldn\u2019t do tours [that were] more than 12 shows because I was just punishing my body and I don\u2019t want to live that way. I did not want to go on stage every night. I was just like, \u2018I don\u2019t want to play! I don\u2019t want to play! I don\u2019t want to play! Let\u2019s drink some more.\u2019 And I don\u2019t want to live that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese last shows are different because it\u2019s really exciting to just say goodbye,\u201d he says. \u201c\u2018Oh s\u2014t, this is the last time we\u2019re ever playing Portland, Oregon. We\u2019ve had so many experiences here.\u2019 And it\u2019s like, \u2018I don\u2019t have to do this again, so I\u2019m going to have a great time.\u2019 And we are, we\u2019ve been having a great time at these shows, and that\u2019s how I f\u2014king want to go out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since realizing it was time to end NOFX, Fat Mike has been \u201cway more fun to be around than I have in the past few years.\u201d He now approaches these gigs with excitement rather than dread.<\/p>\n<p>While NOFX may be hanging it up, Fat Mike and the group aren\u2019t heading to the punk rock retirement community detailed in \u201cMattersville.\u201d In December 2022, Fat Wreck Chords announced the creation of the Bottles To The Ground Records imprint, a label curated and owned mostly by the members of NOFX. Eric Melvin has launched his Melvinator project, molding together punk, EDM, hip-hop and funk. El Hefe appeared in the Mayans M.C. series, and Smelly launched his Pickle Stix surf and skateboard line.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NOFX - Darby Crashing Your Party (Official Video)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mX3VMY08NPw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Plus, there\u2019s much more NOFX left to go. <em>Half Album<\/em> will complete the trifecta, and there\u2019s still the matter of that final LP. And there are the final shows, which have been grand in helping the four members secure their financial futures. He needs to run, as he\u2019s due to give <strong>Brett Gurewitz<\/strong> of Bad Religion \u2013 an early believer in NOFX, as he produced their debut LP and released the band\u2019s first seven albums on his Epitaph Records \u2014 a guided tour of the Punk Rock Museum. \u201cBecause frankly, during COVID was the first time we ever had words because we couldn\u2019t play and money was an issue,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had some arguments,\u201d says Fat Mike. \u201cWe never had arguments before. \u2018What are we going to do about money now?\u2019 And now, doing this last tour, our crowds are bigger than ever and money is not an issue anymore.
