In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/11\/monica-lewinsky-more-amendments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Vanity Fair<\/em> column<\/a>, she called Katyal \u201cmy pal,\u201d leaving some readers wondering about their seemingly unlikely friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out that the connection dates back to 1998, when Lewinsky was the most famous intern in the world. Katyal asked her to speak to his Georgetown University constitutional law class, and she improbably said yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Lewinsky and Katyal talked about their history and the proposed amendments on this week\u2019s episode of <em>Inside the Hive.<\/em> \u201cI was teaching a class actually called Clinton during the Clinton impeachment,\u201d Katyal explained. Lewinsky agreed to visit, provided it would be kept a secret since she was being mobbed by cameras at every turn. \u201cI have never seen a hundred students so riveted,\u201d Katyal said, \u201cbecause she was so articulate, so human, so legally sophisticated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Katyal later wrote Lewinsky a letter of recommendation when she applied to the London School of Economics. She was especially thankful because, at the time, it \u201cwasn\u2019t kosher to like me,\u201d she quipped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On the podcast episode, Lewinsky mentioned a couple of additional proposals she didn\u2019t broach in the column. One was about the presidency: She said she supports allowing a single six-year presidential term rather than two four-year terms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another amendment was suggested by several <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> readers who wrote to Lewinsky in support of having\u00a0\u201ca real, true right to privacy\u201d codified into law. \u201cThat\u2019s certainly something that I felt I didn\u2019t have protected 25 years ago,\u201d Lewinsky said, adding,\u00a0\u201cIt should have been easier for me to be able to figure out whether or not my constitutional rights had been violated back then. And it wasn\u2019t so easy to figure out. It wasn\u2019t clear-cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou\u2019re calling for these constitutional reforms,\u201d Katyal observed, \u201cbut you\u2019re also calling for a kind of change in our culture to bring attention to these issues\u2026. \u2018Hey, do we really want a president to be above the law and be able to pardon himself?
