America Ferrera<\/strong> <\/a>shared some reflections on the way she was described early in her career.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Elle<\/em><\/a> published on Thursday, November 30, the Barbie<\/em> actress, 39, opened up about her journey through Hollywood and the way her body became a topic of conversation. Many of Ferrera\u2019s early roles were centered around her physical appearance, calling attention to her so-called \u201ccurvy\u201d frame.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s so insane is, you go back and look, and I had a very average-size body,\u201d Ferrera told Elle<\/em>. \u201cAnd so the idea that people were looking at me and saying, \u2018That\u2019s curvy\u2019 is crazy. Not that I care, but it\u2019s like, that\u2019s insane that we thought that was so groundbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI was Hollywood\u2019s version of imperfect, which seems so ridiculous. I don\u2019t feel alone in that either. There are so many women who were called brave, just because they are people in bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThere\u2019s no shame in loving your body. Thankfully, more Hollywood stars than ever before are preaching that message, and they won\u2019t let body-shaming comments slide anymore. Lizzo has been vocal about trying to help people accept all body sizes. \u201cI want to normalize my body. And not just be like, \u2018Ooh, look at this cool [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2005\u2019s The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants<\/em>, Elle<\/em> notes, Ferrera\u2019s character, Carmen, was the only member of her friend group who worried that the titular jeans wouldn\u2019t fit. From 2006 to 2010, Ferrera starred in the lead role on ABC\u2019s Ugly Betty<\/em>, which won her an Emmy Award. The premise of the show involved comparing Ferrera\u2019s character, Betty Suarez \u2014 a plain-looking assistant at a fashion magazine \u2014 to her thin, glamorous coworkers.<\/p>\n

In hindsight, Ferrera said she feels like she was pigeonholed into a certain type of role. Going forward, she\u2019s determined to break free of that pattern.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I continue to wish for my career, and women\u2019s careers and people of color\u2019s careers, is that we don\u2019t have to exist inside of these boxes or these lanes \u2014 that we don\u2019t have to be relegated to represent just the thing that the culture wants us to represent,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to be more of who I am as a person, and to get to make art that doesn\u2019t fit into any of the boxes and isn\u2019t about the dominant conversation people have wanted to have about me because I\u2019m a woman who doesn\u2019t fit into stereotypical Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n
