Turn around. If every now and then you get a little bit lonely and feel some fangs in your neck, it\u2019s because Bonnie Tyler<\/strong>\u2019s biggest hit was initially meant for a vampire musical.<\/p>\n

Tyler\u2019s 1983 hit \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d topped the charts in several countries and went on to help define the sound of the \u201980s<\/a>, but in a Monday, November 27, interview, Tyler shared that the song was initially meant for Broadway.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d just signed to Sony and wanted to change from country rock to rock,\u201d Tyler, 72, told The Guardian<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI\u2019d seen Meat Loaf on the BBC\u2019s Old Grey Whistle Test<\/em> doing \u2018Bat Out of Hell,\u2019 so I told Muff Winwood at Sony that I wanted to work with Jim Steinman, who wrote for and produced Meat Loaf.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steinman, who died in 2021 at age 73, liked how Tyler sounded and invited her to meet him at his apartment overlooking Central Park. During the meeting, he played a grand piano while singer Rory Dodd<\/strong> sang a tune Steinman was working on. \u201cHe told me he had started writing the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu years before but never finished it,\u201d Tyler recalled.<\/p>\n

That tune was \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart,\u201d and Tyler said that she \u201cunderstood immediately what an incredible song it was.\u201d She added: \u201cI poured my heart out singing it. We shot the video<\/a> in a frightening gothic former asylum in Surrey. The guard dogs wouldn\u2019t set foot in the rooms downstairs where they used to give people electric shock treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n
