Natalie Portman is against children being actors<\/p>\n
The ‘Black Swan’ star, 42, launched her career at age 12 when she starred in the action film ‘L\u00e9on: The Professional’ in 1994, and she admits it’s only down to “luck” and having “overprotective parents” that she wasn’t “harmed”.<\/p>\n
She told Variety: “I would not encourage young people to go into this. <\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t mean ever; I mean as children.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued: \u201cI feel it was almost an accident of luck that I was not harmed, also combined with very overprotective, wonderful parents.”<\/p>\n
\nThe ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ star is hopeful that the industry is looking after young performers better these days.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI\u2019ve heard too many bad stories to think that any children should be part of it.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHaving said that, I know all the conversations that we\u2019ve been having these past few years. It\u2019s made people more aware and careful.”<\/p>\n
\nHowever, she added: \u201cBut ultimately, I don\u2019t believe that kids should work.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI think kids should play and go to school.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNatalie – who has son Aleph, 12, and daughter Amalia, six, with husband Benjamin Millepied – didn’t come away from being a child actor completely unscathed.<\/p>\n
\nHer classmates used to tease her for her career path because they believed she thought she was \u201cspecial\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nNatalie was speaking to Drew Barrymore for the fellow actress\u2019 eponymously titled talk show, in 2020, when Drew – who was also a child actor and starred with Natalie in the 1996 movie \u2018Everyone Says I Love You\u2019 – said: \u201cI read this thing about how you didn\u2019t have an easy time in school because you would go out to movies and then come back and just have an awkward time with the other kids at school \u2026 I haven\u2019t really read that from a lot of people and that was totally my experience, I really related to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd Natalie confessed: \u201cI mean I think people get bullied for all sorts of reasons and that\u2019s a lucky reason to be bullied for because you are doing something that you love, I mean if you are doing something that you love.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI do think that that sort of creates your empathy like being on that side of the teasing certainly makes you never want to make anyone feel like that ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe \u2018Star Wars\u2019 actress also admitted she found the experience tough, because she felt like she wasn\u2019t able to be \u201cproud\u201d of her accomplishments.<\/p>\n
\nDrew said: \u201cThe irony is that they would always say to me, \u2018You think you\u2019re so special.\u2019 And I really read that in what you said in the copy and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my gosh that\u2019s exactly what they would say to me\u2019 and I was like, \u2018I not only don\u2019t think I\u2019m special but you are absolutely confirming I am not.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNatalie added: \u201cI know it\u2019s so sad and also it\u2019s like you know young people should be able to be proud of their accomplishments and I was like, \u2018Oh God, I should just keep my head down all the time.\u2019 Which isn\u2019t a good way to go through life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
