One of X\u2019s key advertisers, Apple, will pause its advertising on the platform, according to a report from Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apple follows in the footsteps of advertisers like IBM<\/a> and the European Commission<\/a>, who have suspended ads on X amid increased on-platform antisemitism. Per research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, X has failed to moderate<\/a> hate speech on its platform that promotes antisemitic conspiracies, praises Hitler and dehumanizes Muslims and Palestinians.<\/p>\n

But X isn\u2019t just keeping these posts up; its owner, Elon Musk, is fanning the flames of such hatred. In a particularly egregious incident this week, Musk replied, \u201cYou have said the actual truth<\/a>\u201d to a post that echoed the same violent antisemitic conspiracy theory that was espoused by the killer from the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue<\/a> attack.<\/p>\n

Apple did not immediately respond to TechCrunch\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Media Matters for America, a left-leaning media watchdog, published a separate report this week<\/a>, showing how ads from companies like Apple, IBM, Bravo, Oracle and Xfinity have appeared next to posts that praise Nazi ideology.<\/p>\n

Linda Yaccarino, X\u2019s new CEO and former advertising executive at NBCUniversal, has attempted to calm advertisers, though her efforts don\u2019t seem to be working in light of recent events.<\/p>\n

\u201cX\u2019s point of view has always been very clear that discrimination by everyone should STOP across the board \u2014 I think that\u2019s something we can and should all agree on,\u201d she wrote on Thursday afternoon. \u201cWhen it comes to this platform \u2014 X has also been extremely clear about our efforts to combat antisemitism and discrimination. There\u2019s no place for it anywhere in the world \u2014 it\u2019s ugly and wrong. Full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

X\u2019s advertising business has been volatile<\/a> since last year, when Elon Musk officially became the owner of the platform formerly known as Twitter. About a month after he took over, Musk tweeted that Apple had \u201cmostly stopped advertising on Twitter.<\/a>\u201d But after meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook<\/a> at the company\u2019s Cupertino headquarters, the two seemed to settle some disagreements. Then, in January, the company inked deals with adtech companies DoubleVerify<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Integral Ad Science (IAS)<\/a> to help advertisers make sure their ad is not placed around inappropriate content, and the appointment of Yaccarino<\/a> in May was supposed to assuage advertiser\u2019s concerns about the increasingly hostile platform. But Musk continues to dig the platform\u2019s own grave by alienating key revenue drivers.<\/p>\n

As Musk continues to entertain antisemitic conspiracies, the White House weighed in with a statement<\/a> condemning the promotion of antisemitic and racist hate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the most fatal act of Antisemitism in American history at any time, let alone one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust,\u201d wrote White House spokesperson Andrew Bates. \u201cWe condemn this abhorrent promotion of Antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
