It was an important anniversary for Jessica Simpson<\/strong><\/a>. On November 1, the singer and fashion mogul posted a photo on social media. In it, the mom of three looks haggard and puffy-eyed, dressed in sweats and staring into the distance. \u201cThis person in the early morning of November 1, 2017 is an unrecognizable version of myself,\u201d the 43-year-old captioned the shot celebrating six years of sobriety. \u201cI had so much self discovery to unlock and explore.\u201d<\/p>\n

On that rock-bottom day, Jessica could hardly imagine how much better her life would be. In the years since, the Dukes of Hazzard star gave birth to her third child, Birdie, now 4 (she joined sisters Maxwell, 11, and Ace, 10<\/a>), dropped a whopping 100 pounds and saw her marriage to former football pro<\/a> Eric Johnson<\/strong>, 44, blossom. \u201cShe\u2019s totally recalibrated her life from top to bottom,\u201d an insider tells Life & Style<\/em>. \u201cHealth, fitness, romance, parenting, work \u2014 and it makes her so proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Party\u2019s Over<\/h2>\n

First there was shame. In her 2020 memoir<\/a>, Open Book<\/em>, Jessica recalled the night before that hungover 2017 photo. It was Halloween and she\u2019d had a few drinks. Soon she was too tipsy to take her kids trick-or-treating. \u201cI was terrified of letting them see me in that shape,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI am ashamed to say that I don\u2019t know who got them into their costumes that night.\u201d She took an Ambien to help her sleep. The following morning, she was too embarrassed to face her kids. \u201cI slept in, afraid to see them, afraid I had failed them. I hid until they left, then drank.\u201d<\/p>\n

That day, a group of her friends came over and urged her to get help. \u201cI always had a glitter cup, it was always filled to the rim with alcohol,\u201d she later said. \u201cI just realized that I had to surrender, it was time to give it up. I\u2019m not going to miss another Halloween, not going to miss another Christmas. I\u2019m going to be present.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coming Clean<\/h2>\n

The Newlyweds<\/em> alum credits her sobriety \u2014 and subsequent 100-pound slimdown<\/a> \u2014 to hard work and willpower. But the payoff has been worth it. \u201cHer life has totally changed for the better in so many ways and not just physically,\u201d says the insider. For one, her 13-year marriage to Eric is at an all-time high. \u201cThey used to bicker a lot when she drank,\u201d says the insider. \u201cNow they\u2019ve learned to communicate better. Jessica is in touch with her feelings and not hiding behind booze anymore.\u201d An added bonus: She\u2019s more interested in romance. \u201cThey cuddle a lot more as opposed to sitting on opposite ends of the couch with a wine glass or tumbler of liquor.\u201d<\/p>\n

And motherhood has never been more important. \u201cHer connection with her kids and ability to be a good mom when she\u2019s sober versus under the influence is like night and day,\u201d reveals the insider. \u201cThe kids have been a huge motivation not to go back to those old habits when she was way less switched on with them and not giving them her full attention.\u201d
All of which the \u201cIrresistible\u201d singer celebrates when she marks her sober anniversary. \u201cIt puts her recovery into perspective,\u201d notes the insider. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge reminder of what she\u2019s accomplished and why it\u2019s so important never to slip back into that dark old world ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
