Dean McDermott<\/strong><\/a> wants to remain close with his children despite his split from estranged wife Tori Spelling<\/strong><\/a>, a source exclusively tells Us Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants access to the kids and he wants to set a good example,\u201d the insider explains, noting that McDermott, 57 \u2014 who claims he hasn\u2019t seen his kids since June<\/a> \u2014 also hopes to stay in \u201cgood graces\u201d with Spelling, 50, and the rest of her family.<\/p>\n

McDermott first announced his separation from the Beverly Hills, 90210<\/em><\/a> star via social media earlier this summer, but quickly deleted the post shortly after. The former Chopped Canada<\/em> host later revealed what led him to share news of their split in an interview with the Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy worst memory with Tori is that last fight when I was drunk and angry. It was the night that I raged against her and the children and I saw the light, the final flicker of the flame go out in her eyes,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI posted that because I was at the end of my rope. I didn\u2019t know what to do. I had burned everything down yet again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTori Spelling and Dean McDermott have been making headlines since their scandalous start. When the pair met in 2005, McDermott was married to\u00a0Mary Jo Eustace, with whom he shares son Jack, and Spelling was married to Charlie Shanian. \u201cIt was love at first sight. I fell so hard \u2026 Then I noticed he had a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

McDermott shared that he was at his \u201cwit\u2019s end\u201d at the time, \u201cdrinking\u201d and \u201cinto my pills.\u201d He recalled taking \u201csix of seven Ambien\u201d after posting the breakup message \u201cin the hopes that I would not wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Spelling never publicly commented on the post, McDermott claimed that she was \u201ctraumatized\u201d and \u201ctotally caught off guard\u201d by the statement. He added that their five children \u2014 Liam, 16, Stella, 15, Hattie, 11, Finn, 10, and Beau, 5\u00a0\u2014 were \u201cparticularly devastated.\u201d (McDermott is also dad to son Jack, 25, who he shares with ex-wife Mary Jo Eustace<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

McDermott attended a 40-day stint in rehab at Harmony Place after posting the Instagram message, which McDermott said Spelling helped him find. The pair have since called it quits. McDermott \u2014 who currently lives in a sober house with eight other men \u2014 has been spotted kissing<\/a> Lily Calo<\/strong> on multiple occasions, while Spelling has moved on with<\/a> Ryan Cramer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A second source tells Us<\/em> that prior to their split, McDermott and Spelling\u2019s relationship was \u201cvery volatile\u201d and \u201chit a point where friends didn\u2019t like going over to see the\u201d due to McDermott often getting \u201cloud\u201d and \u201cscary.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDermott, for his part, told the Daily Mail<\/em> that he has \u201cinflicted a lot of damage and pain\u201d on Spelling and\u00a0 that his behavior while drunk<\/a> would leave his family \u201cpetrified.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlcohol made me feel good enough. I started feeling good enough until it got to a point where it didn\u2019t \u2014 it ended up in isolation,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt ended up with me drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of narcos by myself with a beautiful family<\/a> in the other room. That\u2019s what it led to and that\u2019s what led to the brokenness and to what happened between me and Tori.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spelling has still not commented on the separation but did take to social media to share a message of strength<\/a> with her fans.<\/p>\n
