Bradley Cooper<\/a><\/strong> faced one of the greatest challenges of his career in directing, cowriting, coproducing and starring in the Leonard Bernstein<\/strong> biopic, Maestro<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Oscar nominee, 48, revealed that he spent several years learning how to conduct for one of the crucial scenes in the film. Cooper recreated Bernstein\u2019s conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at the Ely Cathedral in 1976.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat scene I was so worried about because we did it live,\u201d Cooper said during a conversation<\/a> moderated by Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/strong> following a screening of the movie on Monday, November 13 at the Whitby Hotel in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the London Symphony Orchestra. I was recorded live. I had to conduct them,\u2019 the A Star Is Born<\/em> actor recalled. \u201cAnd I spent six years learning how to conduct six minutes and 21 seconds of music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maestro<\/em> tells the story of the 16-time Grammy winner, whose composing credits include the score for West Side Story,<\/em> and his relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre<\/strong>. They married in 1951, and remained together until her death from lung cancer in 1978.<\/p>\n

Bernstein, who was the musical director for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958-1969, retired from conducting in October 1990. He died that same month from a heart attack.<\/p>\n

In his conversation with Miranda, Cooper recalled he did extensive research to prepare for the scene.<\/p>\n

Many won awards for their onscreen depictions of both beloved and controversial figures throughout history. The American Horror Story actress earned an Emmy for her portrayal of famous prosecutor Marcia Clark in [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI was able to get the raw take where I just watched Leonard Bernstein [conduct] at Ely Cathedral with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1976. And so I had that to study,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Maestro<\/em> has been in development for five years. Cooper coproduced the film with Steven Spielberg<\/strong>, Martin Scorsese<\/strong> and others. Spielberg was originally set to direct the film, after directing a remake of West Side Story<\/em> in 2021. However, after seeing how well Cooper directed A Star is Born,<\/em> he decided the actor was the best person to direct Maestro.<\/p>\n

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/em> in January 2022, Cooper recalled when Spielberg told him about the change.<\/p>\n

He came, we were sitting there and I\u2019m showing him A Star Is Born<\/em>\u00a0and he\u2019s all the way on the other side on the front row, it\u2019s a pretty huge screen,\u201d Cooper told Colbert. \u201cHe gets up and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh he\u2019s going to the bathroom now?\u2019 and I was like, \u2018That\u2019s it, it\u2019s over. If he\u2019s going to the bathroom at this point in the movie\u2026 and he gets up, he walks over, and I\u2019m putting my head down and the next thing I know I feel his face here and he says, because it\u2019s loud, \u2018You\u2019re f\u2014ing directing Maestro!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
