Aaron Hernandez will be the focal point of Ryan Murphy<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s upcoming TV show American Sports Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The limited series about the late NFL star will be based on The Boston Globe<\/em> and Wondery\u2019s \u201cGladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc\u201d<\/a> podcast series, which was released in 2018.<\/p>\n

The forthcoming series \u2014 an offshoot of Murphy\u2019s American Story<\/em> franchise \u2014 will follow the ups and downs in Hernandez\u2019s life, \u201cincluding looking into his identity, his family, his career, his death and his legacy,\u201d per a Variety<\/em><\/a> report from November 2023.<\/p>\n

Hernandez was a tight end for the New England Patriots from 2010 to 2013. He was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd in June 2013 and convicted two years later. In April 2015, Hernandez was found guilty on a first-degree murder charge. Subsequently, he was charged for the 2012 double homicide of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado but was acquitted in April 2017. Days after the acquittal, Hernandez took his own life in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n

American Sports Story<\/em> was originally picked up by FX in August 2021. At the time, it was revealed to be an anthological series based on various events in the sports world.<\/p>\n

Josh Andr\u00e9s Rivera<\/strong><\/a>, who is set to star as Hernandez in the upcoming series, spoke candidly about the \u201cunique and cool challenge\u201d of playing the late athlete.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a story with a lot of factors, as I\u2019m sure everybody with familiarity towards it knows. There\u2019s the mental health factor, the crime factor, the money, the fame, all of these things,\u201d he told Deadline<\/a> in November 2023. \u201cAs an actor, it\u2019s kind of like it\u2019s a dream to have something so, so juicy to dive into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who Is Starring in \u2018American Sports Story\u2019 Season 1?<\/h3>\n

Rivera is \u201cexcited\u201d to take on the role of Hernandez and will undergo a physical transformation before stepping into the former NFL star\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n

Patrick Schwarzenegger<\/strong><\/a> will also star in the series as Hernandez\u2019s University of Florida teammate and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.<\/p>\n
