Another country is banning TikTok, the ByteDance-owned short video behemoth with over one billion active users<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n Nepal, which has a population of close to 30 million people, has banned TikTok. The decision, first reported<\/a> by the New York Times, came\u00a0shortly after the Himalayan country introduced<\/a> a rule requiring social platforms to register with the local government. TikTok\u2019s refusal to curb hate content was affecting \u201csocial harmony,\u201d the report said, citing the Nepal government.<\/p>\n Specifically, Nepal\u2019s officials are apprehensive about TikTok content that is \u201cstoking religious hate, violence and sexual abuse and has led to clashes offline, forcing curfews and the deployment of the police.\u201d<\/p>\n TechCrunch has reached out to ByteDance for comment.<\/p>\n TikTok\u2019s meteoric rise has been met with resistance as countries around the world become increasingly wary of China\u2019s influence. The app lost a significant market in 2021 after India banned it among dozens of Chinese internet services<\/a>, including messaging giant WeChat, in the midst of escalating border tensions between the two nations. In May, Montana became the first state in the U.S.<\/a> to ban TikTok over concerns about Beijing\u2019s possible reach to its user information.<\/p>\n Many other countries, including Canada and the U.K., have imposed restrictions on TikTok to different degrees, mostly barring government officials from using the addictive, algorithm-driven short video app.<\/p>\n TikTok has long maintained<\/a> that it doesn\u2019t share data with the Chinese government. In the U.S., its biggest market, the app spent as much as $1.5 billion<\/a> on \u201cProject Texas\u201d to store user data onshore.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
