A screening of the hotly anticipated biopic Rustin<\/em><\/a> had two unexpected guests Friday night, and we\u2019re not just talking about its actors, who are freshly allowed to promote the project<\/a>. Instead, the stars of the show were former US president and first lady Barack<\/strong> and Michelle Obama<\/strong>, who took the stage to celebrate the end of the actors\u2019 strike and to celebrate the end of the writers’ and actors’ strikes.<\/p>\n

The couple\u2019s production company, Higher Ground<\/a>, is behind the movie about Bayard Rustin, the Black, openly gay activist who organized the ground-breaking 1963 March on Washington\u2014the event perhaps best known as the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech<\/a>. In 2013, then-president Obama posthumously awarded Rustin<\/a> with the Presidential Medal of Freedom; a decade later, the power couple backed a dramatic adaptation of Rustin\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking with CBS Sunday Morning<\/em><\/a>, the former president explained their involvement, saying \u201cThe reason that we were interested in this story \u2013 was this reminds us that the fight for justice is typically not just about one group of people or another group of people. It\u2019s often in tandem. We have to figure out how do we lift up all<\/em> people?\u201d<\/p>\n
