Zac Efron<\/strong> <\/a>has never shied away from a challenge for a role.<\/p>\n

Efron, 36, opened up about transforming into<\/a> Kevin Von Erich<\/strong> for his upcoming film, The Iron Claw<\/em>, which premieres on Friday, December 22. \u201cIt was shocking at every point of the transformation,\u201d he told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday, November 8. \u201cI remember Harris [Dickinson]<\/strong> and I were walking out of hair and makeup and it was the first time we had to wear the full kit, and we were both thinking, \u2018What the hell are we doing here, man? How did we get into this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, explaining, \u201cIt ended up looking really good \u2026 The hair and makeup team was epic.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to giving the hair and makeup departments their props, Efron shared his new workout routine to portray the famous wrestler. Von Erich, 66, \u201creally motivated me to get in shape for this movie,\u201d Efron said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom dreamy teen heartthrob to leading man! Zac Efron has done everything from musicals to comedy to crime thrillers during his career, and his love life has been just as interesting as his work. The actor first won over audiences as Troy Bolton in Disney Channel\u2019s High School Musical, which premiered in 2006. Efron became [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe physicality he brought to the ring every single day was really unique. It changed wrestling,\u201d he continued. \u201cI knew that was going to be the hardest [thing] for me to master and get right. So, I put everything I had into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Efron changed his appearance for a role. In 2017, he maintained a strict diet and workout routine for the movie Baywatch<\/em><\/a>. Efron later opened up about how \u201cburned out\u201d he felt preparing for the role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started to develop insomnia, and I fell into a pretty bad depression for a long time,\u201d he told Men\u2019s Health<\/em><\/a> in October 2022. \u201cSomething about that experience burned me out. I had a really hard time recentering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, Efron discovered the diuretics he was taking to reduce liquids in his body were to blame. \u201cThat Baywatch<\/em> look, I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s really attainable<\/a>,\u201d Efron said. \u201cThere\u2019s just too little water in the skin. Like, it\u2019s fake. It looks CGI\u2019d. And that required Lasix, powerful diuretics, to achieve. So I don\u2019t need to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months after filming wrapped, he started to feel like himself again.<\/p>\n

During his red carpet appearance on Wednesday, Efron was asked about his late 17 Again<\/em> costar Matthew Perry<\/a>. He told Extra<\/em> that he would be \u201chonored\u201d to play Perry<\/a>, who died last month, in a biopic.<\/p>\n
