The move breaks the smart home integrations of thousands of users who relied on platforms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/homebridge.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homebridge<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23744526\/smart-home-assistant-how-to-automation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home Assistant<\/a> to do things like shut the garage door when they lock their front door or flash a light if they leave their door open for 10 minutes, or whatever other control or automation they wanted to do with the device they bought and paid for. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The move comes a year after Chamberlain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/23\/23318157\/chamberlain-myq-home-bridge-hub-discontinued-homekit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discontinued its official Apple HomeKit<\/a> integration and a few months after it finally killed support for <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2023\/06\/16\/chamberlain-myq-google-assistant-discontinued\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Assistant<\/a>. It\u2019s sadly another example of how the company continues to be hostile to the interoperable smart home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Last week, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberlaingroup.com\/press\/a-message-about-our-decision-to-prevent-unauthorized-usage-of-myq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>, Dan Phillips, chief technology officer of Chamberlain, explained the reasons behind its latest move:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote jzbdts2\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup jzbdtsa jzbdts0\">Chamberlain Group recently made the decision to prevent unauthorized usage of our myQ ecosystem through third-party apps. This decision was made so that we can continue to provide the best possible experience for our 10 million+ users, as well as our authorized partners who put their trust in us. It launched in 2011 to solve problems like being halfway to the airport to start a two-week holiday and having to turn around because you can\u2019t remember if you shut the garage door. Today, it\u2019s both a standalone device that can connect to and control your existing garage door opener and a technology integrated into Chamberlain and Liftmaster garage door openers (Chamberlain owns Liftmaster). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">People were relying on \u201cunauthorized integrations\u201d because Chamberlain doesn&#8217;t have any useful authorized ones<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This means if you\u2019re like <em>Verge<\/em> reader Mike Dougherty, who first alerted us to this situation, and you have a Chamberlain door opener with the MyQ tech built in, you now either have to buy a whole new opener or a third-party controller device like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/meross-Compatible-Assistant-SmartThings-Notification\/dp\/B084Z5QZR2?tag=theverge02-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meross Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener remote<\/a> to get back the functionality you used to have.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cOut of general\u00a0principle, it irks me to know that my garage door opener has built-in smart functionality that I will no longer be using,\u201d he said. \u201cI hate that I have to add an additional device (and yet another IP address on my network) to serve the purpose of functionality that I have had for years. Its half-hearted Google Assistant integration (which only allowed you to close the door remotely, not open it) has died a slow, painful death that included <a href=\"https:\/\/staceyoniot.com\/chamberlain-plans-to-charge-for-ifttt-google-home-integrations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an attempt to charge users<\/a> for the privilege of closing their doors with their voice. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">While it was one of the first Apple HomeKit accessories, MyQ no longer supports new HomeKit integrations, having discontinued its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/23\/23318157\/chamberlain-myq-home-bridge-hub-discontinued-homekit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$70 Home Bridge Hub<\/a> that enabled the integration last year. Today, the only open smart home platform <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/myq_devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyQ is compatible with is IFTTT<\/a>, which is cloud-based and requires a paid subscription for setting up more than two of its \u201capplets.\u201d (Following publication, several IFTTT users reached out to say that integration is <a href=\"https:\/\/status.ifttt.com\/incidents\/jkh7rxv555bm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">currently broken as well<\/a>. Chamberlain\u2019s Marenson says this failure is not related to the latest change and that they are \u201cactively working to resolve it.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I asked Chamberlain Group what it recommended its customers who relied on these now-defunct integrations do. \u201cWe have a number of authorized partners that we will be happy for people to use,\u201d said spokesperson Christina Marenson, pointing to its <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?xs=1&amp;id=1025X1701640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.myq.com%2Fworks-with-myq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partner webpage<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">However, those partners are primarily smart security companies with monthly subscriptions (such as Alarm.com and Vivint) and car manufacturers.\u00a0The Ring integration is just a shortcut to the MyQ app. Marenson did confirm that if you bought a Home Bridge Hub, HomeKit integration will continue to work. But Chamberlain no longer makes that product, and she said there is no other way to integrate your MyQ controller with Apple Home. (Note: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/LiftMaster-MYQ-819LMB-Home-Bridge\/dp\/B075RQVSY7?tag=theverge02-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyQ Home Bridge Hub<\/a> is separate from the <a href=\"https:\/\/homebridge.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homebridge platform<\/a>, which is an open-sourced software solution to bring devices into Apple HomeKit). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">Chamberlain just left over 200,000 people without workable solutions<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Interestingly, Chamberlain has been ramping up its car company integrations with a new MyQ software solution, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?xs=1&amp;id=1025X1701640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgo.skimresources.com%3Fid%3D1025X1701640%26xs%3D1%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.myq.com%252Fauto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MyQ Connected Garage<\/a>, which integrates its smart door controller technology directly into a car\u2019s software platform. This has spawned partnerships with <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?xs=1&amp;id=1025X1701640&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgo.skimresources.com%3Fid%3D1025X1701640%26xs%3D1%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.myq.com%252Fauto%252Fconnect-your-car\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen<\/a> as well as more recently with <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberlaingroup.com\/press\/honda-and-acura-owners-can-now-access-home-garage-door-through-their-vehicles-with-myq-connected-garage-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honda, Acura<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/media.mbusa.com\/releases\/release-f5f9c058b57939949da98d1532016b7b-mbux-voice-assistant-smart-home-function-connecting-mercedes-benz-vehicles-with-intelligent-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a>. It appears this type of lucrative partnership is where it wants its customers directed, not playing around in free smart home platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Marenson points out that this change only affects a small number of users, \u201caround 2 percent\u201d of the customer base. However, considering <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberlaingroup.com\/press\/leading-smart-access-solution-myq-reaches-10-million-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chamberlain just announced it has 10 million users<\/a> of its MyQ platform, that\u2019s around 200,000 people who have been left without workable solutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I spoke with Home Assistant founder Paulus Schoutsen, whose platform\u2019s MyQ integration has been available since 2017. He said Home Assistant has reached out multiple times about becoming an \u201cauthorized partner\u201d but that Chamberlain has not officially responded. \u201cNor would we ever pay to integrate with a manufacturer.
