Nia DaCosta<\/strong><\/a> is setting the record straight. The buzzy director who became Marvel\u2019s youngest director and first-ever Black female director with The Marvels<\/em> has addressed a recent Variety<\/em> report<\/a> that she ruffled feathers in the MCU when she left post-production early on The Marvels<\/em> to work on another project.\u00a0<\/p>\n DaCosta\u2019s The Marvels<\/em> serves as direct sequel to Captain Marvel<\/em> starring Brie Larson<\/strong>, and sees Larson\u2019s Captain Marvel join forces with Teyonah Parris<\/strong>\u2019 Monica Rambeau, introduced in the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision<\/em>, and\u00a0Iman Vellani<\/strong>\u2019s Kamala Khan, introduced in the 2022 series \u201cMs. Marvel.\u201d Per the Variety<\/em> story \u201cCrisis at Marvel,\u201d<\/a> The Marvels<\/em> cost approximately $250 million to make and is only tracking to open with $75 million-$80 million when it hits theaters on November 10. They also reported that the film needed \u201cfour weeks of reshoots\u201d to make the three narratives cohesive. On top of the weak projections and reshoots, Variety<\/em> reports that MCU execs \u201ceyebrows were raised again\u201d when DaCosta started working on another film while The Marvels<\/em> was still in postproduction, claiming that the auteur moved to London earlier this year to begin work on the drama Hedda<\/em> starring Tessa Thompson<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re directing a $250 million movie, it\u2019s kind of weird for the director to leave with a few months to go,\u201d said a source familiar with the production.\u00a0<\/p>\n But, according to DaCosta, that\u2019s not entirely true. In an interview for the YouTube channel Jake\u2019s Takes<\/a>, DaCosta said that The Marvels<\/em> went from a \u201ctwo-year\u201d process which she was \u201cdeeply committed to, it became a \u201cthree-and-a-half year process\u201d due to studio delays. \u201cFor me personally, it was that they moved the date of the film four different times,\u201d said DaCosta regarding her departure. \u201cThey knew the entire time that I had an obligation\u2014a green lit movie with people who were waiting for me. And I pushed that and then I pushed it again and then I pushed it again. Eventually we all knew that if [The Marvels]<\/em> pushes again I\u2019m not going to be in LA to do the rest of this in person.\u201d<\/p>\n DaCosta went on to say that her departure from The Marvels<\/em> wasn\u2019t \u201cdramatic\u201d despite reports claims to the contrary. \u201cBy the time I left to start prep on my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was, what we wanted,\u201d she said. \u201cIt really wasn\u2019t this dramatic sort of thing people are thinking it is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n This content can also be viewed on the site it originates<\/a> from.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n As for The Marvels<\/em>\u2019 run time, which at 1 hour and 45 minutes makes it the shortest Marvel movie of all time, DaCosta says she always intended for the film to be under two hours. \u00a0\u201cI always think about the runtime actually, when I go into a film,\u201d she said in an interview with Digital Spy<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI just feel like there\u2019s no need to have it long if you don\u2019t need to, because 1 hour 45 minutes is pretty average for a movie, so we were all really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI just think you do what\u2019s right for the movie,\u201d she continued. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know about this runtime thing until I think it was reported on.
