Elon Musk\u2019s AI startup, xAI<\/a>, is creating its own version of ChatGPT<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That appears to be the case, at least, from Musk\u2019s tweets on X late Friday evening teasing the AI model xAI has been quietly developing. Called Grok \u2014 a name xAI trademarked<\/a> recently \u2014 the model answers questions conversationally, possibly drawing on a knowledge base similar to that used to train ChatGPT and other comparable text-generating models (e.g. Meta\u2019s Llama 2<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Grok leverages \u201creal-time access\u201d to info on X, Musk said. And, like ChatGPT, the model has internet browsing capabilities, enabling it to search the web for up-to-date information about specific topics.<\/p>\n

Well, most topics.<\/p>\n

Musk implied Grok will refuse to answer certain queries of a more sensitive nature, like \u201cTell me how to make cocaine, step by step.\u201d Judging by a screenshot, the model answers that particular question a bit more wryly than ChatGPT; it\u2019s not clear if it\u2019s a canned answer or if the system is, in fact \u2014 as Musk asserts in a tweet \u2014 \u201cdesigned to have a little more humor in its responses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Early Friday, Musk said that xAI would release<\/a> its first AI model \u2014 presumably Grok \u2014 to a \u201cselect group\u201d on Saturday, November 4. But in a follow-up tweet tonight, Musk said all subscribers to X\u2019s recently launched Premium Plus plan, which costs $16 per month for ad-free access to X, will get access to Grok \u201conce it\u2019s out of early beta.\u201d<\/p>\n

Little\u2019s known about Grok so far \u2014 or xAI\u2019s broader research projects, for that matter.<\/p>\n

In September, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, a self-described close friend of Musk, said that xAI had signed a contract to train its AI models on Oracle\u2019s cloud. But xAI itself hasn\u2019t revealed anything about those AI models\u2019 inner workings \u2014 or, indeed, what sorts of tasks they can accomplish.<\/p>\n

Musk announced the launch of xAI<\/a> in July with the ambitious goal of building AI to \u201cunderstand the true nature of the universe.\u201d The company, led by Musk and veterans of DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla and the University of Toronto, is advised by Dan Hendrycks, the director at the Center for AI Safety, an AI research nonprofit, and collaborates with X and other companies in Musk\u2019s stead, including Tesla.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Tucker Carlson in April, Musk said that he wanted to build what he referred to as a \u201cmaximum-truth-seeking AI.\u201d Is Grok this AI? Perhaps \u2014 or it\u2019s a step toward something even bigger.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn some important respects, it (xAI\u2019s new model) is the best that currently exists,\u201d Musk was quoted as saying in a tweet Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s AI ambitions have grown since the billionaire\u2019s split with ChatGPT developer OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever several years ago. As OpenAI\u2019s focus shifted from open source research to primarily commercial projects, Musk grew disillusioned \u2014 and competitive \u2014 with the company on whose board he sat. Musk resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018, more recently cutting off the company\u2019s access to Twitter data after arguing that OpenAI wasn\u2019t paying enough for the privilege.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
