The co-creators of Friends<\/em><\/strong><\/a> are speaking out about the sudden death<\/a> of Matthew Perry<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Marta Kauffman<\/strong> revealed she had spoken to Matthew <\/strong>just two weeks prior to his death, and noted he was sober, had quit smoking, and seemed in an emotionally good place.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n About their conversation two weeks ago, Marta <\/strong>told Hoda Kotb<\/strong><\/a> on the Today <\/em>show, \u201cIt was great. He was happy and chipper. He didn\u2019t seem weighed down by anything. He was in a really good place, which is why this seems so unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n Marta <\/strong>added she was in \u201cutter shock\u201d when she heard the tragic news.<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cMy first impulse was to text him, honestly. It\u2019s hard to grasp: one minute he\u2019s here and he\u2019s happy, and then poof. And doing good in the world, really doing good in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n Due to his history with drugs and alcohol<\/a>, Matthew <\/strong>once said people wouldn\u2019t be surprised by the news of his death. Hoda <\/strong>asked David Crane<\/strong>, the show\u2019s other creator, about this statement.<\/p>\n David <\/strong>responded, \u201cI would say that\u2019s probably true given the journey he\u2019d been on, and we were all aware of it. There was a part that was kind of bracing for something like this. It is still hard to believe, because he was such an alive person that it\u2019s hard to believe he\u2019s not here.\u201d<\/p>\n Marta <\/strong>then said about his current state, \u201cHe seemed better than I had seen in a while. I was so thrilled to see that. He was emotionally in a good place. He looked good. He quit smoking\u2026He was sober.\u201d<\/p>\n She did say she was concerned about him during the Friends<\/em> reunion (in 2021), which fans noted he sounded like he was slurring during. <\/p>\n She shared, \u201cknowing he had been through everything he\u2019d been through and every time he had surgery, they\u2019re giving him opioids for pain, and the cycle starts over again.
