When adapting Priscilla Presley<\/strong>\u2019s memoir, Elvis and Me<\/em><\/a>, into her latest film,\u00a0 Priscilla<\/em><\/a>, filmmaker Sofia Coppola<\/strong> longed to explore who the Presleys were \u201cbehind closed doors,\u201d studying their home movies to capture \u201cthe essence of them and how they were together.\u201d<\/p>\n Coppola reunited with stars Cailee Spaeny<\/strong> and Jacob Elordi<\/strong> for Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2019s Notes on a Scene, where they dissect a pivotal private moment between Priscilla and Elvis. In the scene, Elvis listens to subpar demo records in his home office before asking Priscilla her opinion. When she expresses doubts about the songs, Elvis hurls a chair in Priscilla\u2019s direction, which hits the wall mere inches from her face.\u00a0<\/p>\n Although Priscilla writes of this incident in her book, Coppola says she was insistent that Elvis \u201cdidn\u2019t ever throw a chair at me. It was at the wall next to me.\u201d The musician didn\u2019t actually try to hurt his wife, Coppola emphasizes\u2014\u201cbut he lost his temper.\u201d Seeing the character lose his cool was key in exploring Elvis and Priscilla\u2019s sometimes fraught relationship. \u201cA lot of the movie you\u2019re in his more gentle, more vulnerable side,\u201d Coppola explains. \u201cWe want it to feel like you\u2019re always in Priscilla\u2019s point of view, and it to be shocking when someone\u2019s mood shifts like that.\u201d<\/p>\n Speany says she got valuable insight into Priscilla\u2019s headspace by speaking to the woman herself prior to production. \u201cI had lots of different conversations with her before I started filming, how she was toeing that line between being supportive, but also speaking her mind,\u201d the actor says. \u201cAnd I think this scene is her sort of taking those first steps of having an opinion and voicing it.\u201d<\/p>\n To inhabit the so-called King of Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll, Elordi, who didn\u2019t know much about Elvis until he watched Disney\u2019s Lilo & Stitch<\/em><\/a> as a kid, devoted a lot of time to emulating Presley\u2019s famous voice. \u201cI\u2019m pretty lucky to kind of be in his register anyway,\u201d says Elordi. \u201cBut I think, for me, it was trying to invent what he would sound like behind closed doors, because everyone has a performing voice and a speaking voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
