The 54-year-old shared his wish in a November 2022 interview, which has resurfaced in the wake of his shock death aged 54 on Saturday (28.10.23) in the hot tub at his home in Los Angeles in a suspected drowning. <\/p>\n
Matthew \u2013 whose drug addictions almost killed him \u2013 told in the chat on the \u2018Q with Tom Power\u2019 podcast, which is being shared online by fans, about how he didn\u2019t want his role as Chandler Bing in \u2018Friends\u2019 to be his legacy: \u201cBest thing about me \u2013 bar none \u2013 is if somebody comes up to me and says, \u2018I can\u2019t stop drinking, can you help me?\u2019 I can say \u2018Yes\u2019 and follow up and do it. That\u2019s the best thing. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019ve said this for a long time, when I die, I don\u2019t want \u2018Friends\u2019 to be the first thing that\u2019s mentioned. <\/p>\n
\u201cI want that to be the first thing that\u2019s mentioned, and I\u2019m going to live the rest of my life proving that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMatthew admitted he knew despite his wish that his power to help addicts would fall \u201cfar behind\u201d on his list of accomplishments when it came to being remembered by fans. <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI know it won\u2019t happen, but it would be nice.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nIn 2013, Matthew turned his Malibu mansion into a sober living facility for men and named it \u2018Perry’s House\u2019. <\/p>\n
\nMatthew also revealed he wrote a theatre production about his addiction battles. <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI also wrote my play \u2018The End of Longing\u2019, which is a personal message to the world, an exaggerated form of me as a drunk. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI had something important to say to people like me, and to people who love people like me.’\u201d <\/p>\n
\nMatthew\u2019s memoir \u2018Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Candid, Darkly Funny Book\u2019 exposed his struggles with addictions \u2013 which got so severe that in 2018 at the age of 49 he suffered a gastrointestinal perforation as a result of his extreme opiate usage. <\/p>\n
\nHe was given just a two percent chance of living after being comatose for two weeks and the actor had to use a colostomy bag while his colon healed. <\/p>\n
\nMatthew revealed that while his body was relying on the bag, he woke up covered in his own faeces \u201c50 to 60\u201d times throughout the five months he was hospitalized. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI had s*** all over my fave, all over my body, in the bed next door. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen it breaks, it breaks. You have to get nurses.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nHe said at the peak of his addictions he was consuming about 55 Vicodin pills a day and weighed just 128 pounds. <\/p>\n
\nMatthew also joked viewers could now tell what drugs he was abusing by observing his varying appearance on \u2018Friends\u2019. <\/p>\n
\nHe said in his book: \u201cYou can track the trajectory for my addiction if you gauge my weight from season to season. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen I\u2019m carrying weight, it\u2019s alcohol; when I\u2019m skinny, it\u2019s pills; when I have a goatee, it\u2019s a lot of pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
