The recovering drink and drug addict \u2013 who spent years battling addictions behind the scenes on \u2018Friends\u2019 \u2013 made the now-poignant premonition in his memoir \u2018Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing\u2019, released in November 2022. <\/p>\n
He said in the book about his addiction: \u201cNot only do I have the disease, but I also have it bad. <\/p>\n
\u201cI have it as bad as you can have it, in fact. It\u2019s back-to-the-wall time all the time. It\u2019s going to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Matthew went into graphic detail in his book about how he had nearly died and was given a one in 50 chance of surviving after his colon burst due to opiate use. <\/p>\n
\nThe actor also used the memoir to make the poignant admission he couldn\u2019t bring himself to watch himself playing Chandler Bing on \u2018Friends\u2019 as he hated the way his looks changed on the sitcom depending on what drug he was abusing. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI didn\u2019t watch the show, and haven\u2019t watched the show, because I could go, drinking, opiates, drinking, cocaine. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI could tell season by season by how I looked. That\u2019s why I don\u2019t wanna watch it, because that\u2019s what I see. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128 lbs, I was on \u2018Friends\u2019 getting watched by 30 million people \u2013 and that\u2019s why I can\u2019t watch the show, \u2018cause I was brutally thin. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI had a rule that I would never drink or do drugs while working. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBecause I had too much respect for the five people I was working with. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo I was never wasted while working. The thing that always makes me cry… is that it\u2019s not fair. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s not fair that I had to go through this disease while the other five didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
