Robbie Williams says making his new documentary was a \u2018trauma watch\u2019 and like witnessing a \u2018crash you were involved in\u2019<\/p>\n
The 49-year-old former Take That singer is the subject of a new four-part Netflix docuseries which sees him watch old footage from his career in music, and focuses on his drug addiction and rehabilitation journey. <\/p>\n
He told The Times about how it was a \u201ctrauma watch\u201d when he saw the end product: \u201cIt was like watching a crash you were involved in, but in slo-mo. <\/p>\n
\u201c(Making the documentary) was like enduring your mental illness at a very, very slow pace, over a very, very long time. It\u2019s a niche thing to experience, you know. There aren\u2019t many support groups for it. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they asked me to make the documentary, I came up with a jingle for it: \u2018Trauma watch!, Trauma watch!, Have a trauma watch!. I was in Take That then I left Take That, Then I did drugs and I got real fat\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRobbie, who has been sober for more than 20 years and has four children with his wife Ayda Field, 44, added: \u201cThey didn\u2019t use that in the end.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nHe said about his initial hopes for his harrowing documentary: \u201cWhen I met the Netflix people, the question I had to ask them was, \u2018Can you polish a turd?\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI know everyone\u2019s got a story, or a turd, but I want my particular story, or turd, to mean something. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cLike, I know everyone\u2019s really interested in the trauma aspect and the addiction aspect, but I\u2019ve always thought, \u2018Well, there\u2019s more to me than that\u2019. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI wanted to break with the form. I need things to be\u2026 different from what they were.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nSpeaking about being filmed watching old pieces of footage from his life, Robbie added: \u201cIt was intense. But you have to show it to all the people who just go, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s tomorrow\u2019s chip paper\u2019, or, \u2018Nobody believes what they read in the papers\u2019, or, \u2018Brush it off\u2019. Well, I was incredibly mentally ill. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cYou can\u2019t brush that off. That\u2019s basically like people saying, \u2018Don\u2019t be sad\u2019, to someone who\u2019s mentally ill. And we know not to do that now, don\u2019t we?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
