Instagram boss Adam Mosseri has high ambitions for Threads: he wants it to become the \u201cde facto platform for public conversations online,\u201d he said on Friday. Big statement to make on the one-year anniversary of Elon Musk taking over Twitter!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Meta\u2019s aspirations came up as part of a question Mosseri answered in an AMA: \u201cWhat do you think \u2018success\u2019 looks like for Threads in one year?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re actually debating this right now internally,\u201d Mosseri said<\/a>. \u201cI do think the long-term aspiration is to be the de facto platform for public conversations online, which is about cultural relevance as much as it is about the overall size of Threads.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mosseri noted that Threads is \u201cobviously\u201d not the largest public conversation platform right now, saying that X, formerly Twitter, holds that title. He\u2019s encouraged by Threads\u2019 prospects, saying that \u201cI think we have a chance of surpassing them,\u201d even if X has \u201cgot a big head start and we\u2019ve got a long way to go.\u201d (Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this week that Threads has \u201cjust under\u201d 100 million monthly active users<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Right now, Mosseri is trying to keep the Threads team \u201cfocused on improving the core experience every week.\u201d I\u2019d argue it\u2019s doing a pretty good job keeping up that pace, recently adding things like polls and GIFs<\/a> this week and a free edit feature<\/a> you don\u2019t have to pay for earlier this month<\/a>. \u201cLittle by little, I think we can continue to build momentum and get there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mosseri responded to a few other questions about Threads during his AMA. He thinks that \u201csome version of hashtags or tags\u201d that make it easier to find things by topic might be useful<\/a>, but they\u2019re not an improvement that will \u201cmeaningfully change the trajectory of the app.\u201d He said that while the company has work to do to improve the Threads web app<\/a>, there\u2019s \u201cway more usage of Threads on iOS and on Android\u201d than on web and that the web version is \u201cnot our primary focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mosseri is also looking for ways to better integrate the teams working on both Instagram and Threads. \u201cBecause of where I sit, I have an opportunity to actually look at all these different teams and what they\u2019re doing and find opportunities to work together more closely,\u201d he says. Maybe that\u2019s why some people are starting to see Threads recommendations on Instagram<\/a> (which Meta is \u201clistening to feedback\u201d about<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
