On October 25, after several weeks that saw dysfunction, chaos, humiliation, and anonymous threats<\/a> to at least one lawmaker\u2019s wife, Republicans finally elected<\/a> a Speaker of the House to succeed Kevin McCarthy<\/strong><\/a>:<\/strong> Mike Johnson,<\/strong> a representative from Louisiana who has the distinction of being the least experienced<\/a> Speaker in more than a century.<\/p>\n At the time of Johnson\u2019s accession, a lot of Americans likely had no idea who he was<\/a>; actual Republican senator Susan Collins,<\/strong> for one, told<\/a> a reporter she didn\u2019t know Johnson but planned to remedy that by googling<\/em> him. And if you weren\u2019t familiar with Johnson, you might\u2019ve assumed that that was maybe even a good thing\u2014that he was just a quiet Republican who hadn\u2019t gotten wrapped up in the insanity plaguing the GOP over the last seven or so years. He didn\u2019t have the name recognition of, say, Jim Jordan<\/strong> or Matt Gaetz,<\/strong> but perhaps that simply spoke to the fact that he wasn\u2019t leading a series of absurd hearings<\/a> in an attempt to take down Joe Biden;<\/strong> or bragging about being so devoted to Donald Trump<\/strong> that he answered his phone calls during sex<\/a>. Maybe, you might have thought, he wasn\u2019t someone you\u2019d have to constantly worry about re: undermining democracy or trying to take away people\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, that is not<\/em> the case with Johnson, who may not have been well known prior to being given one of the most powerful jobs in government but is very much someone whose extremist views and actions should keep you up at night.<\/p>\n Herein, a running list of the absolute most WTF things the new Speaker has said and done on everything from the 2020 election to abortion to LGBTQ+ rights and more.<\/p>\n Abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n Johnson is proudly antiabortion. When Roe v. Wade<\/em> was overturned last year, he called<\/a> it \u201ca great, joyous occasion,\u201d later writing<\/a>, \u201cWe will get the number of abortions [in Louisiana] to ZERO!!\u201d As an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, now known as the Alliance Defending Freedom, he worked on efforts to shut down abortion clinics in the state<\/a>. In Congress, he cosponsored legislation that would have banned<\/a> abortions at about six weeks of pregnancy, i.e., a time when many people do not even know they\u2019re pregnant. He\u2019s beloved by the antiabortion organization Susan B.\u00a0Anthony\u00a0Pro-Life America, which has given him an A+ rating<\/a>.
