The company has also not confirmed what tech veteran Chris Messina found in X\u2019s code \u2013 that audio and video calls will only be available to subscribers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per TechCrunch\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/25\/x-will-make-audio-and-video-calls-a-premium-subscriber-only-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other lines of code refer to a warning that appears when someone tries to DM another user on the app which explains that \u201caudio and video calls are a premium feature,\u201d and entices them to \u201csubscribe to gain access.\u201d That means users will have to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-x\/x-premium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pay for X Premium<\/span><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: -0.1px;\">It\u2019s also unclear how users will be able to truly screen calls. For those who have gotten early access to the feature, the options for allowing calls include verified users, people you follow and people in your address book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X no longer responds to requests for comment after Musk\u2019s takeover, only replying with an automated message to incoming press queries, so we couldn\u2019t ask for more details as to why X is introducing this feature, and why now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, Musk hasn\u2019t been shy about wanting to turn X into a platform similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/10\/08\/elon-musk-x-everything-wechat-tesla-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China\u2019s WeChat<\/a> \u2013 a messaging app that has become a central place for all digital transactions, be they shopping or news or communications.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Musk\u2019s overarching vision for X has always been a financial services app.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the time Musk was buying Twitter, the billionaire described to his biographer Walter Isaacson what he thought the platform could become. \u201cIf you combine a social network with a payments platform, you could create what I wanted X.com to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musk rebranded<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/24\/twitter-has-officially-changed-its-logo-to-x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter to X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in July, but X.com has been around since 1999 when it was a prelude to PayPal. In those days, Musk thought X.com could be a one-stop everything-store for all financial needs, including banking, digital purchases, checking, credit cards, investments and loans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video and audio calling doesn\u2019t seem to necessarily align with that goal. In fact, the idea of receiving a phone call on a social media platform when you\u2019re just there to consume information rapidly, is a bit jarring to the senses \u2014 doubly so if that call is coming from some random verified X user.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tangentially, though, Musk could be taking a page out of Uber\u2019s book of non-stop product announcements and trying to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/18\/how-uber-is-trying-to-create-stickiness-for-its-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create stickiness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within X. Uber began as a ride-hail service and then moved onto food delivery. Now the company has expanded on those pillars, offering users the ability to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/17\/uber-launches-private-chartered-boats-in-mykonos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charter a boat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/10\/04\/uber-couriers-will-now-drop-your-package-off-at-the-post-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">return packages to the post office<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/03\/01\/uber-launches-explore-to-book-events-and-reservations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make dinner reservations<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also similar to how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/11\/14\/the-amazonification-of-uber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has played the game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, using its other products, like Alexa, to drive secondary revenue to the core business whenever a customer says, \u201cAlexa, order me another bulk round of peanut butter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How that might play out at X is that a user would come for the shitposting and live Spaces, but they might stay for the convenience of internet-enabled phone calls, the long-form posts and video, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/personal-finance\/elon-musk-twitter-payments-high-yield-2022-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-yield savings account.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And since these features will likely only be available to subscribers, the old throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks tactic could become a revenue driver for X.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or it might not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all hinges on whether Musk is able to deliver on his broader plans in the long run. Not only will it be a technical problem to solve, but the U.S. isn\u2019t China.
