Hocus Pocus<\/em> director Kenny Ortega<\/strong><\/a> believes there may have been one more witch running amok in Salem besides just the Sanderson sisters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI did feel the whole time that there was a little witch [in the character of Allison],\u201d Ortega, 73, recalled to Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Tuesday, October 17. \u201cI even thought there was potential for a spinoff that was about that, and I had conversations about that many years later at the Disney Channel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Allison, portrayed by Vinessa Shaw<\/strong><\/a>, was the love interest of protagonist Max (Omri Katz<\/strong><\/a>) in the 1993 Halloween classic. The pair \u2014 along with Max\u2019s little sister Dani (Thora Birch<\/strong><\/a>) \u2014 team up against the resurrected Sanderson witches Winifred (Bette Midler<\/strong><\/a>), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker<\/strong><\/a>) and Mary (Kathy Najimy<\/strong><\/a>) to defeat them before the clock strikes midnight and all the children of Salem are lost forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the film\u2019s release, Shaw\u2019s character sparked fan theories that she may have magical abilities. In one pivotal scene, she sprinkles salt around her to ward off the evil trio, prompting Winifred to call her a \u201cclever little witch.\u201d Ortega also felt that while he never discussed the theory with Shaw directly, the actress\u2019 performance naturally hinted<\/a> at her being of the supernatural.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen Hocus Pocus dropped in theaters in 1993, it flopped \u2014 but it has since lasted the test of time, becoming a must-watch film every October. Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters, the spooky classic follows a high school boy (Omri Katz), his crush (Vinessa Shaw) and his [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI thought she was bewitching as a teenage girl,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt was not typical for Max to fall head-over-heels for her. She had a mystical beauty, and she was bewitching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ortega\u2019s spinoff idea never came to fruition, but the themes are touched on in Hocus Pocus 2<\/em>, which premiered in October 2022. After bringing back the child-hungry witches 20 years later, newcomers Becca (Whitney Peak<\/strong><\/a>), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo<\/strong>) and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham<\/strong>) realize they also have witchy powers \u2014 and ultimately use a spell to help defeat the sisters for good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaw didn\u2019t return for the highly-anticipated sequel<\/a>, but Escobedo, 25, previously revealed that she was initially written into the story. \u201cShe was going to be our schoolteacher,\u201d she told EW<\/em> in 2022. \u201cI remember talking to [director] Anne [Fletcher]<\/strong> about it<\/a> being a thing where she was our teacher, and we went to her for help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible Shaw \u2014 along with OG castmembers Katz, 47, and Birch, 41 \u2014 will make their return for Hocus Pocus 3<\/em>, which Disney announced earlier this year. There are plenty of ways to bring Allison and Max back to Salem, according to the actress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think Allison\u2019s from Salem and [Max] always wants to be in California,\u201d she told Entertainment Tonight<\/em> in October 2021. \u201cI think they did some sort of compromise and maybe she\u2019s in Salem when the witches come back, you know, visiting her mom or something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As for those witchy rumors? Shaw agrees Allison is more than just a mere mortal \u2014 and believes that her wardrobe in the film further proves the theory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was intentionally implied, for sure,\u201d she told The Wrap<\/em> <\/a>in 2022. \u201cBecause if you notice the necklace I\u2019m wearing \u2026 It has kind of like a pentagram-looking design with the stones. If you look really closely \u2026 it\u2019s a gold kind of locket, with white pearls connected to the locket, and it has a kind of design on it that could, if you kind of connected it all together, would have looked like a pentagram. But again, it was never explicit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
