Brandan and Mary are together now in Candoni, in the Philippines \u2026 but the fights haven\u2019t stopped. <\/p>\n
Instead, their constant conflicts have changed. And it has Mary\u2019s family, who witness a lot of it, worried about their future.<\/p>\nOur first introduction to Brandan and Mary was watching as Mary watched him use the bathroom. They went from gushing over each other to learning to navigate awkward realities to \u2026 just quarreling over every little thing.<\/p>\n
On Episode 14, Mary shared that she shared her pregnancy news with her grandmother. That sparked a concern \u2014 that Brandan and Mary\u2019s constant fighting might impact her pregnancy, or the baby. (Hormones like cortisol can absolutely impact fetal growth; that is not an old wives\u2019 tale)<\/p>\nBrandan and Mary exchanged a heartwarming and emotional embrace when they finally met in person. But something changed.<\/p>\n
Mary complained about how Brandan was sleeping in and playing games on his phone. Those are very age-appropriate behaviors for a 23-year-old \u2026 but not encouraging for a partner and a father-to-be.<\/p>\n
Their fights increased as Brandan apparently didn\u2019t help out Mary like she wanted. And it became embarrassing; even the neighbors could overhear their bickering.<\/p>\nUpon arriving in the Philippines, Brandan learned about the medieval farming techniques that he would need to help with. And that wasn\u2019t the only volume issue, as he\u2019d turn up <\/em>the volume on a video when she asked him to turn it down. Childish, contrarian s\u2013t that you just don\u2019t do to someone you love.<\/p>\nSpeaking of which, Brandan escalated to verbal abuse, spouting things like \u201cf\u2013k you, Mary.\u201d Awful.<\/p>\nBrandan\u2019s first time leaving the US was when he moved to the Philippines. But even if their conflict had been healthy (it was not), the aftermath was also bad.<\/p>\n
Brandan would simply storm out of the house and sleep on a stone bench in town. Deeply weird.<\/p>\n
We all heard him insist that he was doing his best, but \u2026 clearly, he wasn\u2019t. They were making each other, and themselves, miserable.<\/p>\nBrandan had some trouble adapting to his new life under Mary\u2019s grandparents\u2019 rules. Eventually, Mary became pregnant, and she told him as much.<\/p>\n
That didn\u2019t fix Brandan\u2019s attitude. If anything, it may have simply cemented his feeling of being trapped<\/em> in the life that he chose. Because it\u2019s no longer just about him and Mary.<\/p>\nGetting a ride in Mary\u2019s part of the Philippines was a little different than it was for Brandan back home. Meanwhile, Brandan feels doubly powerless because not only is he \u201cstuck\u201d in the Philippines, but he can only work if he marries Mary.<\/p>\nBrandan made an interesting impression upon viewers. And there\u2019s the fundamental weirdness of dealing with Mary\u2019s family dynamic.<\/p>\n
Then there are other stressors. He\u2019s adjusting to living in a new country. It\u2019s very different, and he doesn\u2019t speak the language.<\/p>\n
He seemed to start to \u201ccheck out\u201d after Mary\u2019s pregnancy news. It could be misery and crushing reality hitting home \u2026 but it\u2019s also unfair to Mary.<\/p>\nBrandan enjoyed one last fishing trip before moving to the Philippines. It\u2019s not just translating, it\u2019s the house. He paied for it, but it\u2019s Mary\u2019s. She and her family could kick him out.<\/p>\n
And while he could, in theory, just return to the US, he\u2019d be leaving behind a baby. Plus, Brandan and Mary do really love each other. It seems way too late. And, of course, we know that he and Mary married.<\/p>\n
Perhaps they could come to the US on a marital visa. But they\u2019d have to work out their issues, raise a lot of money, and wait a few years, first. Can their relationship last that long?
