That\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2023-10-08\/apple-plans-smaller-lighter-vision-headset-meta-works-on-cheaper-quest-3-ar-lnhh1ulx?srnd=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Mark Gurman<\/a> in today\u2019s <em>Power On <\/em>newsletter for <em>Bloomberg<\/em>, who writes that the company\u2019s Quest headset marketing plans have changed in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23747065\/apple-vision-pro-headset-hands-on-features-specs-price-release-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple\u2019s Vision Pro announcement<\/a> earlier this year. Part of the plan is to release a VR headset without controllers to get the cost down next year. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Gurman says a person within Meta told him the company is \u201cin the \u2018afraid of Apple\u2019 stage,\u201d comparing it to the mobile phone industry just before the iPhone\u2019s launch. He writes that the company\u2019s shift away from a heavy focus on the metaverse and more to pushing the practical uses of the headset \u2014 gaming and productivity \u2014 is a direct response to Apple\u2019s pitch for the Vision Pro. You could argue that Apple\u2019s headset is more down-to-Earth than immersive virtual worlds, even if its price is very much not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/28\/23619730\/meta-vr-oculus-ar-glasses-smartwatch-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta\u2019s roadmap has involved<\/a> making its next headset, codenamed Ventura, even cheaper \u2014 The Quest 3 is already less than 15 percent the cost of a Vision Pro \u2014 and more comfortable without sacrificing screen resolution. And apparently, according to Gurman, Meta is also looking at doing away with controller bundling to help with that, letting customers either just use hand gestures or buy controllers separately.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Apple and Meta are ultimately after different markets, but at the moment, the existing VR headset market is pretty much just \u201cpeople who want VR headsets\u201d \u2014 you know, early adopters.
