As the man responsible for Hostel<\/em>, Hostel II: Part Two<\/em> and Cabin Fever<\/em>, Eli Roth<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s name has become synonymous with horror films \u2014 but according to the director, there\u2019s one scene that made even him apprehensive.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with Us<\/em> to promote his new animated series, Fright Krewe<\/em>, Roth, 51, recalled 2007\u2019s Hostel: Part II<\/em>, which featured Heather Matarazzo<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Lorna hanging from the ceiling nude before meeting a grisly death. \u201cWe were shooting it going, \u2018Is this too much?\u2019\u201d he recalls. \u201cBut it\u2019s her acting that makes it so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

2005\u2019s Hostel<\/em> laid the foundation for what has been one of the goriest film franchises to date \u2014 and included one moment that Roth believed would be a game changer. \u201cI knew the Achilles tendon was going to get people,\u201d he says of the unforgettable scene where Derek Richardson<\/strong>\u2019s Josh falls forward after his ankle is slashed.<\/p>\n

Of course, as scary movie enthusiasts know, one of the most chilling scenes in horror film history is in 2002\u2019s Cabin Fever<\/em> featuring Cerina Vincent<\/strong>\u2019s Marcy taking a bath before her skincare routine goes wildly wrong. \u201cI had an experience where I shaved and I thought, what if a girl was shaving her legs and she didn\u2019t realize it, [but she] shaved her legs off?\u201d the Inglorious Bastards<\/em> actor describes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just start thinking, how can I write a story around that?\u201d Roth explains. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s something you don\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2002 film \u2014 which was also Roth\u2019s directorial debut \u2014 holds a special place in the Visionary Award winner\u2019s heart. He also credits Cabin Fever<\/em> for instilling in him how to improvise after the prosthetics froze while being shipped to North Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spent a month making these beautiful leg strips that would peel like a banana, and they froze and none of it worked,\u201d he explains, noting the team decided to make do with sound effects. The result garnered the kind of reaction Roth hoped for. \u201cPeople were running out of the theater screaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was one of those lessons I learned that even if you don\u2019t have the makeup effects and even if everything falls apart, you can use sound effects,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t the only time Roth had to make things work on the fly. For Green Inferno<\/em>, \u201cWe were running to the supermarket because they stopped all the body parts at Customs, so we had to create [them] out of meat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roth hopes to find a new \u2014 albeit, much younger \u2014 audience with his new animated series, Fright Krewe<\/em>. \u201cWith kids\u2019 scary shows, there\u2019s a lot of great messages. You can work in things about teamwork and overcoming your fears,\u201d he explains. \u201cMonsters always represent the worst sides of ourselves, or some aspects of our personalities, so in a strange way, a great scary show or a movie for kids really helps them deal with their own monsters and fear of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
