Practical Magic,<\/em><\/a> a heady blend of \u201990s romantic comedy, domestic violence horror, and supernatural trickery, is perhaps best encapsulated by a single moment: \u201cYou have the worst taste in men,\u201d Sandra Bullock<\/strong>\u2019s Sally groans as she helps her sister, Gillian (Nicole Kidman<\/strong>), bury the evil ex they\u2019ve killed in the backyard of their magical mansion.<\/p>\n Twenty-five years after the film\u2019s release, its synopsis remains spellbindingly dense. Bullock and Kidman play sisters bound by a curse that befalls any man who falls in love with a woman in their family. After their father perishes and their mother dies of a broken heart, the sisters are raised in an enviable cliffside estate by their wonderfully wicked aunts (Stockard Channing<\/strong> and Dianne Wiest,<\/strong> in roles originally envisioned for Vanessa Redgrave<\/strong> and Julie Christie<\/strong>). Sally vows to never fall in love, while Gillian flings herself toward romance.<\/p>\n The sisters spend several years apart\u2014Sally marries and has two children (Evan Rachel Wood<\/strong> and Alexandra Artrip<\/strong>) with a man (Mark Feuerstein<\/strong>) whose demise arrives as predicted, and Gillian gets entangled with her abusive boyfriend, Jimmy (Goran Visnjic<\/strong>). The pair kill Jimmy after he attempts to kidnap them, but his spirit lingers, requiring a full-on exorcism. Oh, and things are further complicated by the investigation into Jimmy\u2019s murder by Aidan Quinn<\/strong>\u2019s Gary Hallet, whom Sally discovers she\u2019s falling in love with.<\/p>\n Suffice it to say, the movie is a lot. \u201cI remember Bob Daly,<\/strong> who was co-CEO of Warner Brothers\u2014at our premiere, he sat one row in front [of me],\u201d the film\u2019s director, Griffin Dunne,<\/strong> tells Vanity Fair<\/em>. \u201cAfter a very lighthearted scene with girls giggling and being hilarious, [we were] having them dig up a body from a rose bush and stick needles in its eyes. He turned to the person next to him and went, \u2018I wish the kid would just pick a tone.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Critics tended to agree. Despite opening at number one<\/a>, the film, adapted from Alice Hoffman<\/strong>\u2019s 1995 novel with a screenplay by Robin Swicord,<\/strong> Akiva Goldsman,<\/strong> and Adam Brooks,<\/strong> was deemed \u201ctoo scary for children and too childish for adults,\u201d by the likes of Roger Ebert<\/a>. Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> called it \u201ca witch comedy so slapdash, plodding, and muddled it seems to have had a hex put on it.\u201d<\/p>\n Dunne, son of longtime VF<\/em> contributor Dominick Dunne<\/a> and an actor<\/a> best known for 1985\u2019s After Hours,<\/em> never helmed another studio film. But in the decades since its release, Practical Magic<\/em> has morphed into a cult classic, beloved particularly by women for its enviable soundtrack (Faith Hill<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cThis Kiss\u201d! Joni Mitchell<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cA Case of You,\u201d! Two original Stevie Nicks<\/strong> tracks!) and themes of sisterhood. \u201cDealing with several different tones in the same film is not that unusual anymore,\u201d says Dunne. \u201cWhen I did American Werewolf in London,<\/em> it was the same reaction. People were really upset that there were laughs in a horror movie. Now you can\u2019t make a horror movie without getting laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n Fervor around the film gets particularly heightened around Halloween, Dunne says. \u201cA little name-drop here, just two nights ago I was in my local restaurant in the Hudson Valley. Paul Rudd<\/strong> is one of my neighbors, and he came over and said, \u2018My son\u2019s girlfriend is obsessed with the movie. Can I bring her over? She wants to just talk to you about it.\u2019 She joined our table and asked me the same questions you\u2019re asking\u2014just devoured every tiny detail about it.
