The young (at heart) and the (not at all) hopeless: Good Charlotte cemented their place in music history nearly three decades ago, but they aren\u2019t done yet.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with Us<\/em>, Joel Madden<\/strong><\/a> looked back on everything the band has accomplished since he and brother Benji Madden<\/strong><\/a> formed Good Charlotte in the \u201890s. \u201cI\u2019m proud that we started as a group of kids in school together when we were 15 and we stayed together for 27 years now,\u201d the \u201cArtist Friendly\u201d podcast host<\/a>, 44, tells Us<\/em> while promoting season 15 of Ink Master<\/em>. \u201cWe survived things that no one told us how to or what would be ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2000, the group\u2019s self-titled album helped Good Charlotte develop a loyal fanbase, but 2002\u2019s The Young and the Hopeless<\/em> \u2014 which included \u201cThe Anthem\u201d, \u201cLifestyles of the Rich & Famous\u201d and \u201cGirls & Boys,\u201d just to name a few \u2014 helped put the band on the map.<\/p>\n

Madden credits Good Charlotte\u2019s signature sound as being one of the many reasons the band has remained a music mainstay. \u201cGood Charlotte is one of a kind,\u201d the dad of two \u2014 he and wife Nicole Richie<\/strong><\/a> share Harlow, 15, and Sparrow, 14<\/a> \u2014 explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a band that\u2019s kind of unique to itself, and it\u2019s hard to put us completely into a box.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tight-knit bond he shares with bandmates Paul Thomas<\/strong>, Billy Martin<\/strong> and Dean Butterworth<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cIt\u2019s like being in a marriage and we\u2019re all still married,\u201d Madden says \u2014 has also contributed to their long-lasting legacy: \u201cWe care a lot about Good Charlotte and what it means,\u201d he continues. \u201cWe do everything with a lot of intention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later this month, the group will play for the first time in almost five years at When We Were Young<\/a><\/em> in Las Vegas. \u201cWe\u2019ve been shaking the rust off and rehearsing, it\u2019s been really fun,\u201d Madden says. \u201cAll of us are excited to play together, so we\u2019re talking about recording some stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAnother star-studded Lollapalooza festival is in the books, with both A-list and up-and-coming artists taking over Chicago\u2019s Grant Park. Lollapalooza 2023 kicked off on Thursday, August 3, with performances by Billie Eilish, Karol G, Lainey Wilson and more. Throughout the weekend, fans danced to Carly Rae Jepsen, The 1975, Kendrick Lamar and Sylvan Esso before [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The group are also considering hitting the road \u2014 but the MDDN owner stops short of officially confirming anything. \u201cIt has led to a conversation about a tour next year,\u201d Madden tells Us<\/em>. \u201cIf we [decide] something, we\u2019re going to announce it likely before the end of the year, or the top of next year \u2014 if there\u2019s anything to announce.\u201d<\/p>\n

With seven albums under their belt, figuring out which hits to play during their set<\/a> shouldn\u2019t be too difficult \u2014 and when it comes to the classics, Madden can\u2019t help but play favorites. \u201cI really still love \u2018Hold On\u2019 to this day,\u201d he says. \u201cI love playing it. [It\u2019s] a big mid-tempo ballad, but has a lot of meaning to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s older music \u201care the DNA of all the things we do these days,\u201d the musician explains. \u201cIt\u2019s [about] finding a way to give people something to take away for themselves, to relate to it in their own way and use it in a positive way for their own life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madden also points to some of the band\u2019s more recent singles as being personally significant. \u201cThere\u2019s a song we have called \u2018Last December\u2019 [which holds] a lot of meaning,\u201d he tells Us<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s some songs on Generation RX<\/em> that I really loved, like \u2018Actual Pain\u2019 and \u2018Shadowboxer.’\u201d<\/p>\n
