May December<\/em> is a fictional story that took heavy inspiration from Mary Kay Letourneau<\/a>\u2018s infamous relationship with her student Vili Fualaau<\/strong> \u2014 which allowed Julianne Moore<\/strong><\/a> to base her role off the controversial scandal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted a fictional story that dealt with this tabloid culture of the \u201990s that has kind of seemingly led into this true crime biopic world we\u2019re in now, and kind of question that transition and why we want to keep recreating these stories,\u201d screenwriter Samy Burch<\/strong> explained her vision during a screening at the New York Film Festival on Friday, September 29.<\/p>\n

Burch added: \u201cAll of these stories like this that are in the ether are just completely embedded in everyone\u2019s cultural history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director Todd Haynes<\/strong>, meanwhile, discussed how Moore\u2019s performance took inspiration from Letourneau. The former teacher made headlines in 1996 for the statutory rape of Faulauu, then her sixth-grade student<\/a>. She served three months in jail for two counts of felony second-degree rape and later received a six-year prison sentence for making contact<\/a> with Fualaau, now 40, again. The pair ultimately welcomed two kids and were married for more than a decade before their 2019 separation.<\/p>\n

May December<\/em> stars Natalie Portman<\/strong><\/a> as an actress named Elizabeth who travels to meet and study the life of Gracie (Moore), who she is set to play in a project. Gracie\u2019s notorious romance with Joe (Charles Melton<\/strong>), who is 23 years her junior<\/a>, is the subject of the fictional film.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis idea of how does this kind of original relationship occur? What is the myth these two people tell each other about the roles they\u2019re playing?\u201d Haynes said during the event about Moore\u2019s character. \u201cShe\u2019s not a pedophile, this woman; she doesn\u2019t have a history of going after every little teenage boy. There\u2019s something very specific that happened to these two people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haynes noted that a large part of what keeps Gracie and Joe together is their reluctance to talk<\/a> about the origins of their relationship.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMay December is an upcoming film about a couple struggling under the weight of their age gap, which takes inspiration from the story of Mary Kay Letourneau\u2018s infamous affair with her student Vili Fualaau, who was 22 years her junior. According to the synopsis, the film picks up years after a notorious romance between Gracie [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s shrouded in a fantasy, which is that she is the princess that needs to be rescued from the domestic tower, and he\u2019s the young, virile knight, almost like a Greco-Roman young knight, who\u2019s gonna come in with all this sexual virility and power and beauty and save her,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd so she plays the little girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Haynes, Moore, 62, based her speaking voice on past footage of Letourneau, who died at age 58 in 2020 from cancer.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, there were things in kind of a loose upper palate that we did find interesting in Mary Kay Letourneau\u2019s speech that was a kick-off for her. And she took it further,\u201d Haynes said of Moore\u2019s approach. \u201c[These creative decisions] helped us to sort of understand how this happened or the delusions that helped produce it.\u201d<\/p>\n
