Pete and Ariana\u00a0went Instagram official in May 2018<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 as we all know, things moved\u00a0very<\/i>\u00a0quickly after that. She had just broken up with rapper\u00a0Mac Miller<\/a>\u00a0and the comedian was splitting from Cazzie David.<\/p>\n By June of that year, Pete and Ariana were\u00a0not only engaged, but were staples on the red carpet. \u201cI feel like I won a contest,\u201d the\u00a0comedian\u00a0gushed to\u00a0Jimmy Fallon<\/b><\/a>\u00a0during an episode of\u00a0The Tonight Show<\/i><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s f\u2013king lit, Jimmy. It\u2019s so lit.\u201d<\/p>\n Three months later,\u00a0however, Ariana\u2019s ex-boyfriend\u00a0Mac\u00a0died of an accidental drug overdose on September 7, 2018. The Grammy Award winner\u2019s grief put a definite strain on her engagement to Pete, and by October,\u00a0they officially called it quits.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI totally got it. \u2018Cause we were only together for a few months \u2014 she\u2019d even tell you this. I was like, \u2018Listen, I get it, do whatever you gotta do, I\u2019ll be here.\u2019 I think I said, \u2018I\u2019ll be here until you don\u2019t want me to be here,’\u201d Pete recalled to\u00a0Charlamagne tha God<\/b>\u00a0during a\u00a0February 2020 interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI pretty much knew it was over after that,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat was really horrible. I can\u2019t imagine what that s\u2013t is like. That s\u2013t is just terrible. All I do know is that she really loved the s\u2013t out of him and she wasn\u2019t putting on a show or anything. That was\u00a0f\u2013ked up.\u201d<\/p>\n Since Ariana and Pete\u2019s split, the \u201cThank U, Next\u201d singer has\u00a0opened up about their relationship many times<\/a>, including in a July 2019 cover story with\u00a0Vogue<\/i><\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction, Ariana told the publication. \u201cIt was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn\u2019t know him.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
