European countries might be exempt from the forced opt in as the change would likely bring Reddit into direct conflict with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/3\/28\/17172548\/gdpr-compliance-requirements-privacy-notice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU\u2019s GDPR rules<\/a>, which require companies to get express permission to collect or process personal data for use in activities like advertising. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/8\/1\/23815382\/meta-targeted-ads-opt-in-eu-data-privacy-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta recently carved out similar exceptions<\/a> for European Facebook and Instagram users earlier this year to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/metas-targeted-ad-model-faces-restrictions-in-europe-11670335772?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bring it into compliance<\/a> with EU privacy laws.
