Euphoria<\/em><\/a> creator Sam Levinson<\/strong><\/a> saw a hidden gem in Angus Cloud<\/a> \u2014 and restructured the show\u2019s plot to keep him in the cast.<\/p>\n

\u201cAngus was supposed to die at the end of the first season, but I loved him so f\u2014ing much. The first thing I noticed about him was he had those Paul Newman eyes,\u201d Levinson, 38, told People<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Monday, September 25, while reflecting on working with the late actor. \u201cIt killed me. He was perfect. I think part of the problem is I would sometimes put actors ahead of the show at times. So I was like, \u2018Okay, I can\u2019t kill him because then what is he to look forward to?’\u201d<\/p>\n

News broke in July that Cloud died at age 25<\/a>. Two months later, the Alameda County Coroner told Us Weekly<\/em> that Cloud died of acute intoxication<\/a> following an accidental overdose. According to the authorities, the actor had cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl and benzodiazepines in his system at the time of his death.<\/p>\n

Before his passing, Cloud had been candid about his struggles with substance abuse<\/a>. While filming the HBO series<\/a>, Levinson, who has also been candid about his past addiction issues, picked up that Cloud wasn\u2019t the best version of himself after sustaining an injury during the pandemic. After Levinson offered to help him get clean, Cloud agreed to enter a 30-day in-patient program<\/a> which HBO reportedly paid for.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOnly the beginning. Euphoria\u2018s season 2 finale introduced many twists and turns that ended with the audience having more questions than answers. Even though the entire season hinted at Fez\u2019s (Angus Cloud) potential demise, it was actually his little brother that ended up dying after they were sold out to the police. Instead of allowing [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI looked him in the eye and I knew that he wasn\u2019t doing well,\u201d Levinson said to the outlet. \u201cAt the same time, I\u2019ve been in these situations before where you\u2019re trying to get someone clean. And I just said to him, \u2018I love working with you and we\u2019ve got this amazing season planned and stuff, but I need you to be sober because I got to be able to rely on you.’\u201d<\/p>\n

In season 2, Cloud\u2019s character was meant to die despite having a pivotal role<\/a> in the first half. However, Levinson fought for Cloud once again, calling him \u201ctoo special.\u201d Ultimately, Levinson told the production team they needed to \u201ckeep him around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one thing that I knew is he loved making this show. He loved the crew. He loved the actors. He loved everything about it,\u201d Levinson reflected. \u201cAnd I just thought, if this goes away, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen in his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
