Hong Kong-based crypto company Mixin<\/a> announced on Sunday that it was breached and that the hackers stole around $200 million.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the early morning of September 23, 2023 Hong Kong time, the database of Mixin Network\u2019s cloud service provider was attacked by hackers, resulting in the loss of some assets,\u201d the company wrote on X<\/a>, formerly Twitter. \u201cDeposit and withdrawal services on Mixin Network have been temporarily suspended. After discussion and consensus among all nodes, these services will be reopened once the vulnerabilities are confirmed and fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n The company said it contacted Google and crypto security firm SlowMist to help with the investigation.<\/p>\n Mixin describes its product as an \u201copen and transparent decentralized ledger, which is collectively booked and maintained by 35 mainnet nodes.\u201d In other words, the Mixin Network is a decentralized exchange and cross-chain network that allows users to transfer digital assets.<\/p>\n \u201cWe build open source software that always puts security, privacy and decentralization first,\u201d the company says<\/a> on its website, where Mixin claims it has one million users<\/a> as of July.<\/p>\n At this point, it\u2019s unclear how hackers were able to steal the money after hacking into Mixin\u2019s cloud database, given that \u2014 in theory \u2014 Mixin is decentralized.<\/p>\n Mixin, Google, and SlowMist did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n In the announcement, Mixin also said that it will announce an unspecified \u201csolution\u201d to deal with the stolen assets at a later date.<\/p>\n The hack on Mixin is the biggest theft in the crypto world in 2023, according to data maintained by Rekt<\/a>, an organization that publishes a list of hacked crypto organizations and projects.
